High Stakes at Red Bull Ring: Bagnaia and Martin Commit to Full-Throttle Title Fight
Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin pledge to "take risks" at the Red Bull Ring.
"This is not the right time to ease up or avoid taking chances."
MotoGP championship contenders Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia enter the latter part of the 2024 season with only a three-point difference between them at the top of the leaderboard.
The lead in the title race has shifted from Martin to Bagnaia and then back to Martin again in the past three rounds.
After their 2023 championship was narrowly clinched by Bagnaia in the final race of the season, both competitors concur that it’s premature to ease up and reduce the level of risk.
"It's a thought-provoking question, but personally, I always give my all, whether it's to secure a place on the podium or even a fifth position. Any achievement is valuable," Martin stated.
“I'm definitely not focusing on the championship just yet. There's still a lot of the season left, and it's anyone's game.”
"If you begin to focus solely on completing a race or being overly cautious about securing more points, you might end up losing points that could be crucial by the end of the season."
The decision varies with the weekend and the circumstances, but if I am in the lead on Sunday and need to take a risk, I will do so. However, if I realize there’s no opportunity, I will remain more composed.
Bagnaia, who secured two victories in Austria last season, commented, "The championship is extremely close at the moment, so this isn't the time to ponder the risks. It's about consistently giving 100% effort."
"It’s likely to remain this way until the final two or three race weekends. For instance, last year in Japan, with six grand prix races left, we secured first and second place in a risky, wet, flag-to-flag race."
"In my opinion, it really varies based on the circumstances and the timing within the season. However, now is not the right time to ease off or to avoid taking risks."
With 370 points remaining available, the frontrunners are not dismissing the chances of fellow Ducati racers Enea Bastianini, who is 49 points behind, and Marc Marquez, who trails by 62 points, from contending for the world championship.
"We four are definitely the strongest, by a margin," Martin remarked. "But let's wait and see. I believe everything is still very much undecided."
Bagnaia concurred, saying, "Predicting the current situation is very challenging." He acknowledged that while he and Jorge are consistently among the top riders, they have also made numerous errors during the races.
“If Enea or Marc can maintain their consistency, it would make for an exciting battle until the end. However, at this point, it's tough to make any predictions. For now, we can only say that the competition will be among the four of us.”
