Lewis Hamilton Leads in Italian Grand Prix Second Free Practice, Kevin Magnussen Experiences Crash
Lewis Larkam from Crash.net witnessed Lewis Hamilton leading the practice session at Monza
Departing Mercedes racer Lewis Hamilton just barely surpassed McLaren’s Lando Norris for the quickest lap during the second practice session at the F1 Italian Grand Prix.
In FP2, with soft tyres, Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, edged out Norris, the victor of the previous week's Dutch Grand Prix, by a mere 0.003 seconds on the Monza track.
Carlos Sainz of Ferrari, whom Hamilton is set to replace at the Italian team next season, finished third fastest, trailing by 0.103 seconds.
In a fiercely competitive second practice session, the leading five drivers were closely bunched within a margin of only 0.154 seconds, with McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc securing the fourth and fifth positions, respectively.
During the second practice session, Kevin Magnussen experienced a setback when he lost grip on his Haas vehicle at the second Lesmo turn, leading to a collision with the barriers and triggering the day's second stoppage due to a red flag.
Reigning world champion Max Verstappen ended up in 14th place after he had to abandon his fast lap on soft tyres due to veering off course at the last turn.
George Russell secured a sixth-place finish despite a delayed start, missing the first 20 minutes on the track due to ongoing repairs on his vehicle. This was a result of a significant accident involving Andrea Kimi Antonelli during his initial practice session in FP1, which impacted Mercedes' preparations.
Nico Hulkenberg secured the seventh spot for Haas, leading Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and the Aston Martin duo of Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll, who completed the first ten positions.
