George Russell on Red Bull’s Radar: Analyzing Potential F1 Driver Line-Up Changes Amid Ricciardo’s Uncertain Future
George Russell mentioned in Red Bull's broader strategic decision
Is George Russell a potential candidate for Red Bull’s future Formula 1 team?
Christian Horner mentioned George Russell as a possible future candidate for Red Bull F1's driver roster while he faced questions about the team's choices.
Red Bull is considering substituting Daniel Ricciardo with reserve driver Liam Lawson for the last spot alongside Yuki Tsunoda in 2025.
There are increasing rumors that the exchange might take place before the United States Grand Prix next month, suggesting that Ricciardo could be racing in his last Formula 1 event in Singapore this weekend.
"This matter is continuously being evaluated, and clearly there is a broader context beyond just Daniel as we keep considering all of our choices moving ahead," Horner stated to Sky Sports F1.
A significant pause is approaching, with nearly a month until the next competition. It's normal to reflect and evaluate all available choices for the remainder of the year during this time.
"This isn't a criticism of Daniel. We’re well aware of his performance. We have extensive data and insights on Daniel’s capabilities. The decision is part of a broader context considering the overall driver lineup and future dynamics."
"During this three-week break, we will certainly take the time to evaluate all of our options."
Horner acknowledged that Red Bull continues to have uncertainties about Lawson's true potential, even though the New Zealander made a strong impression during a short stint for their affiliate team last season when Ricciardo was sidelined due to an injury.
"We've provided numerous young talents with fantastic opportunities throughout the years. The Red Bull program requires both results and high performance," he clarified.
“Certainly, Max is performing well. This year, Checo hasn't met expectations. In the previous year, he performed adequately to secure second place in the championship and contribute to the constructors’ championship win."
“We need to plan for the future. We have some outstanding talent, including Liam Lawson as a reserve. When considering prospects like Franco Colapinto, Ollie Bearman, and Kimi Antonelli, we’re uncertain if he matches their level. Time will be the ultimate judge.”
"We have Isack Hadjar in Formula 2, who was leading the championship until recently. In Formula 3, there's Arvid Linblad, a promising young talent that I'm especially enthusiastic about. Our junior program is strong and diverse. We need to carefully evaluate all our future options."
Horner stressed that Red Bull wouldn't hesitate to consider drivers outside their current lineup, and interestingly, he mentioned Russell—who is signed with Mercedes until the end of 2025—as a possible candidate.
"George Russell's contract is set to expire at the end of next year," Horner mentioned. "It would be unwise for us to ignore that fact. Additionally, there are other skilled drivers whose contracts may also be ending soon."
Horner was questioned about speculation that Lawson's contract contains a condition requiring Red Bull to secure him a seat in one of their teams for the next year by September 15, or else face the possibility of losing him entirely.
Horner emphasized that he would not discuss the details of the drivers' contracts, citing the need for confidentiality between the company and the individuals involved.
"Liam's performance last year was outstanding. We chose to prioritize experience, though, since Daniel was our backup in case Sergio made a mistake."
"Daniel has had a decent season, but it hasn’t been outstanding. The pressing issue now is evaluating Liam’s potential. At times, tough choices are necessary to find those answers. We will review our options during this three-week break."
