George Russell Adopts Spectator Strategy for Austrian GP, Aims to Avoid Early Battles with Verstappen and Norris
George Russell intends to "observe from a distance" starting from the third position
George Russell outlines his strategy for the beginning of Sunday's Austrian Grand Prix.
George Russell has stated his intention to steer clear of any clash with Max Verstappen and Lando Norris during the opening stages of the F1 Austrian Grand Prix.
The Mercedes competitor secured the third spot on the starting lineup for Sunday's race at the Red Bull Ring, trailing behind McLaren's Norris and Red Bull's Verstappen, who clinched a commanding lead for the pole position.
Last week in Barcelona, Russell made a remarkable leap from fourth position, overtaking Norris and Verstappen to secure the lead by the first corner.
However, the British competitor has dismissed the idea of a recurrence, stating that he plans to "relax and observe everything as it unfolds" instead.
"Russell believes it's somewhat tougher in this environment," he mentioned. "It seems that these individuals tend to be more aggressive. So, perhaps on this occasion, it's best to just observe from a distance and see how things unfold."
"However, reflecting on the previous week, my engagement in the duel with Lando took up a significant amount of my time, leading me to concentrate excessively on the competitors in front. This distraction, in the end, resulted in me conceding my spot to Lewis and nearly losing it to Charles as well."
"Thus, as previously mentioned, I believe the competition will be concluded by tomorrow."
Inquired about Mercedes' prospects in the upcoming race, Russell mentioned his anticipation that Verstappen and McLaren would be too far ahead to catch.
"He pointed out, 'It appears that Lando and Oscar are slightly faster than we are. Clearly, Max is quite ahead for now.'"
"I'm not sure about Oscar's final position, but I believe Lewis and I might outperform the Ferraris in tomorrow's race and potentially impede Oscar's advancement."
"However, it's an extended competition with significant wear; anything is possible."
