Fuel Fiasco at Final Corner: Quartararo Loses Fifth but Remains Optimistic After Emilia Romagna MotoGP
Fabio Quartararo narrowly misses his season's top finish due to fuel shortage: “Still extremely pleased”
Just shy of securing his season-best grand prix position, Fabio Quartararo's race ends one corner short.
Fabio Quartararo was on the verge of securing his season's highest goal of finishing in the top six at Sunday's Emilia Romagna MotoGP in Misano, falling short by just one corner.
However, the Monster Yamaha racer was harshly stripped of the fifth position when his fuel ran dry just as he was exiting the second-to-last turn.
Franco Morbidelli and Maverick Vinales surpassed the struggling French rider as he approached the finish line, placing Quartararo in seventh position by the end of the race, a result that matched his highest finish on a Sunday for the season.
"By the time I reached the penultimate turn, my tank was completely empty. I did everything within my power, yet I remain extremely pleased with the race's outcome. This has definitely been one of our top Grand Prix events of the year," Quartararo remarked, after effectively keeping his ex-teammate Morbidelli, who was on the Ducati GP24, at a distance.
"We're looking forward to seeing how we perform in the upcoming international competitions. Achieving similar outcomes in Indonesia would represent significant progress for our team. Recently, my confidence and comfort on the bike have greatly improved. I believe we can take pride in the progress we've made recently."
Quartararo crossed the line 20.922 seconds behind the victor, Enea Bastianini, yet maintained a 12-second lead over the top Japanese motorcycle, which was Honda's Joan Mir, finishing in eleventh place.
The Indonesian Grand Prix's opening practice session is scheduled for Friday, marking the anticipated return of Alex Rins, Quartararo's teammate, to racing. Rins had previously missed the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix because of illness.
