From Procession to Passion: MotoGP Seeks Thrilling Comeback at Aragon After ‘Boring’ Austrian GP
Austrian MotoGP's 'Boring' Track: A Unique Challenge
"The track is quite unique, making the start and first lap crucial."
Following a rather uneventful Austrian Grand Prix, MotoGP aims to provide a far more captivating event at Aragon this upcoming weekend.
Even though MotoGP did not compete at the Spanish track last year, the prospects look good. The outcomes of the last two races held there were determined by final-lap duels and mere fractions of a second.
The 5.077-kilometer track features a diverse range of turns, unlike the stop-start nature of the Red Bull Ring.
"It was extremely dull!" Luca Marini concurred, having seen most of the Austrian Grand Prix on television from the Repsol Honda garage because of an early mechanical problem.
"It is quite challenging for riders to maintain a tight distance with the rider ahead due to factors such as tire temperature and brake temperature."
"When you're tailing another rider closely, it becomes harder to bring the bike to a stop. As a result, you can observe that there's over a 1-second gap between each rider."
"The initial phase and the opening lap of this track are crucial."
Marc Marquez and Franco Morbidelli managed to create some excitement with their comeback rides, offering a bit of overtaking drama.
Austria has been the stage for some unforgettable final battles, such as those between Marquez and Andrea Dovizioso.
"Exactly, it was because they were Dovi and Marc. Two different manufacturers competing for the championship," Marini explained.
"At present, since only a Ducati can compete with another Ducati, it's challenging to witness such battles."
Miguel Oliveira from KTM clinched victory in the 2020 Red Bull Ring race, making a decisive move on the final turn after the race was restarted.
In the lead-up to the Aragon weekend, a newly resurfaced track and an additional choice of Michelin rear tyre present several uncertainties.
