From Moto2 to MotoGP: Is Somkiat Chantra Set for a 2025 Dream Debut with LCR Honda?
"There's nothing confirmed yet, but could this be the most surprising MotoGP rider in 2025? 'I notice people on social media and many are asking me if I'm joining LCR next year.'"
Somkiat Chantra, who has won races in the Moto2 category, expressed that joining the MotoGP with LCR Honda in 2025 would be "a dream come true." However, he clarified that no official agreements have been made at this time.
In recent weeks, the Thai motorcyclist has been heavily associated with a potential transition to MotoGP next year, specifically with the Idemitsu-sponsored team within the LCR Honda setup.
Lucio Cecchinello, the head of LCR, has recently confirmed that discussions are ongoing with both Takaaki Nakagami and Chantra. However, it now seems that Chantra is the leading candidate.
When questioned about the rumors, Chantra responded, "I've noticed on social media and have been asked by many people, 'Will you be joining LCR next year?'"
"At the moment, nothing has been finalized yet. For now, I am focusing all my efforts on Moto2. We'll see what the future holds, whether I move to LCR or continue in Moto2."
“If I have the chance to become a MotoGP rider, I would be extremely happy. It’s my dream, so let’s wait and see what happens.”
“My manager told me to continue putting in my best effort in Moto2 for now, and we’ll see what happens in the future.”
Before the summer vacation, Nakagami expressed his desire to continue racing with LCR and Honda in MotoGP past the year 2024.
Following the surge of rumors about Chantra, Nakagami revealed to the press during last weekend's Austrian Grand Prix that he had received an intriguing proposal from HRC, but he declined to elaborate further.
If Chantra steps into MotoGP next year, which seems probable, he will join another former Asia Talent Cup competitor in advancing to the top-tier racing class.
Before last weekend’s Austrian Grand Prix, Trackhouse Racing announced that Ai Ogura, who finished second to Chantra in the Asia Talent Cup in 2016, has been signed on a two-year contract to join the Aprilia satellite team in MotoGP for the next season.
Reports have surfaced indicating that MotoGP is considering scheduling the Thailand GP as the first race of the 2025 season, which would provide Chantra with the rare chance to debut in his home country.
