From Karting Gifts to F1 Dreams: Jack Doohan’s Journey and the Schumacher Connection
Alpine F1's latest recruit, Jack Doohan, shares a connection with the legendary seven-time F1 champion, Michael Schumacher.
Jack Doohan is set to enter Formula 1 next season, joining the ranks of Alpine, as the team disclosed this update on Friday during the Dutch Grand Prix.
Doohan's remarkable performance as a test and reserve driver has secured him a position racing with Pierre Gasly in the F1 2025 season.
The ascent of the Australian through the ranks, despite not securing championship victories, has been marked by his consistently impressive pace.
He is also the offspring of the renowned motorcycle icon, Mick Doohan.
Mick is universally acknowledged as one of the finest in the realm of motorcycle racing, securing five 500cc world titles.
Nonetheless, his son chose a path in single-seat racing after getting his initial go-kart at the age of 7 from Michael Schumacher.
Schumacher shared a strong friendship with Mick, both excelling in their individual motorsport categories.
In a recent interview, the latest recruit for Alpine mentioned, "Michael Schumacher was a close family acquaintance since my early years. Michael would sometimes come to stay with us in Australia since he was good friends with my father. At one point, they were neighbors in Monaco."
Michael presented my sister and me with our initial go-kart at the age of three. Considering all his achievements and his overall mindset, he's a person I greatly admire.
"Similarly, my dad is a huge inspiration to me due to his remarkable accomplishments, especially considering his humble beginnings. He has provided me with the chance to pursue my dreams, something I'm incredibly grateful for. Unlike me, he didn't have these advantages, so his commitment and hard work were extraordinary, and I deeply admire him for it."
The strong bond shared by the Schumacher and Doohan families extends even further.
Renowned Formula 1 figure Eddie Jordan disclosed that Mick, the son of Schumacher, was named in honor of Doohan as a tribute.
"Contrary to popular belief, Mick Schumacher's name doesn't come from his father," Jordan noted.
Mick Schumacher's name pays homage to an athlete whom his father, Michael, deeply admired. This individual had impressively secured five consecutive world championships with Honda.
"In a gesture of honor, Michael Schumacher named his son Mick, after the renowned Mick Doohan."
Mick Doohan remains a familiar face in the F1 paddock, there to back his son's racing career and also serving at times as a steward for the FIA.
