Franco Morbidelli Reflects on Tangle with Marc Marquez Amid Holeshot Device Drama at Austrian MotoGP
Franco Morbidelli comments on the incident with Marc Marquez: ‘He moved to the left, causing us to collide’
Franco Morbidelli explained, “As I was passing through, he shifted to the left, and we ended up entangled."
The incident involving Marc Marquez's front holeshot device led to a clash with Franco Morbidelli at the first turn of Sunday's Austrian MotoGP race.
Due to insufficient acceleration, Marquez quickly dropped from third to sixth place, while Morbidelli also attempted to maneuver past the Gresini rider.
However, the space Morbidelli was targeting between Aleix Espargaro and Marquez vanished abruptly, causing the two riders to collide and veer off course.
Marquez came back to the race in 13th place, while Morbidelli was positioned in 18th.
"When I reached Turn 1, Marc encountered an issue. I believe he didn't activate the front device or something similar, which affected his speed," Morbidelli explained.
"He moved to the left just as I was passing by, and we ended up getting tangled."
"Ultimately, nothing occurred, and I’m pleased with that outcome."
In a race with minimal passing, Marquez managed to advance by nine spots by the time he crossed the finish line, while Morbidelli improved by ten places.
"It was challenging to recover from 18th place. Overtaking on this track is difficult," Morbidelli stated.
"The front tire pressure increased dramatically, significantly reducing overall performance. Despite this, we managed to climb to eighth place, making it a positive race for us."
In MotoGP, overtaking is increasingly challenging because there is minimal performance disparity between the bikes on the straightaways. Additionally, all riders can brake very late, thanks to the ride height devices on the bikes.
"However, today I moved up ten spots. Similarly, in France, I advanced by ten or eleven places. So, it's still achievable."
"I'm pleased with our pace and the sensations I felt. I aim to secure a better qualifying position in Aragon and the upcoming races."
