Four-Way Showdown at Aragon: Bagnaia Predicts Intense Battle Among MotoGP’s Top Contenders
Francesco Bagnaia anticipates a competitive race among top contenders at the Aragon MotoGP
Francesco Bagnaia shares his thoughts: “I believe it’s going to be a tight competition among the four of us. Enea clinched the victory previously, I secured a win back in 2021, Marc has triumphed six times, and Jorge has consistently shown impressive speed."
Francesco Bagnaia was a key figure in the recent Aragon MotoGP races, engaging in a tight battle with Marc Marquez to clinch his first win in 2021, and then narrowly missing victory to Enea Bastianini in a similarly intense competition in 2022.
However, the current two-time world champion and frontrunner believes a battle among the top four Ducatis could unfold at Aragon’s comeback on the schedule this weekend.
Bagnaia expressed his pleasure in being present, attributing his fondness to the track's excellent design. He commented, "The combination of braking zones and quick turns is great, which leads me to believe that our bike will perform well here, just as it did during our last two visits when it matched the track's layout flawlessly."
"I believe it's going to be a competitive race among the four of us. Enea was the victor in the last race here, I claimed victory in 2021, Marc has triumphed here six times, and Jorge has consistently shown speed. It's shaping up to be an exciting contest."
The Italian racer, entering the weekend with a slim lead of five points over Pramac's Martin, stated: "Creating distance from competitors is challenging on this circuit, and it would be great to experience a contest similar to the ones we had in 2021 and 2022."
Teammate and previous champion Bastianini concurred, noting that "any of the four competitors has a shot at victory," emphasizing the importance of kicking off the weekend on a strong note right from the first practice session.
Currently, the major uncertainty revolves around the fresh asphalt and its potential roughness, which could benefit Bastianini.
"The updated pavement could make a difference, but initially, we need to test each of the tires since we have three options for both the rear and the front, instead of the usual two. We'll determine which ones to employ in the race as we proceed."
Martin mentioned feeling like an outlier because he hasn't secured a victory in the MotoGP category at Aragon. Even though he's nearly on par with Bagnaia in the rankings, he also hasn't claimed a win in a Sunday race since the event at Le Mans.
"Reflecting on the period since his last Le Mans outing, and a near miss at Sachsenring where he fell, Martin expressed confidence in his abilities. He believes he consistently holds the potential to win, despite finishing in ninth and sixth places at the Aragon MotoGPs in 2021 and 2022, respectively."
"Over the past couple of weekends, my approach was perhaps more cautious, focusing on securing points. Additionally, Pecco demonstrated outstanding performance in Austria, making it quite challenging."
"Things get tricky here. Essentially, these three racers have already clinched victories in MotoGP. My win came in Moto3 back in 2018. So, I'm the outlier. I'm hoping to seal a win here too…"
Marquez mentioned that only an impeccable weekend would give him an opportunity to contend for the win, whereas Bagnaia, despite being at the forefront of the world championship, emphasized his commitment to battle with the same intensity as he did in 2021.
"Certainly. My mindset remains the same. My goal is to secure victory. The sole distinction from my initial win in 2021 to the present is that now, I'm aware of the various strategies to achieve success," he explained.
"If the race from 2021 were happening today, I'd focus on increasing my lead over Marc to secure a bigger advantage. Nonetheless, the competition could still be as intense, and it would be amazing to experience that same level of rivalry and ideally, achieve the same outcome this Sunday."
