FIM MotoGP Stewards Rule ‘No Further Action’ in Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon Clash
FIM MotoGP Stewards release decision on incident involving Francesco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez
The FIM Stewards have issued their decision after the collision between Francesco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP on Sunday.
The FIM MotoGP Stewards have decided not to take any additional measures after the intense collision involving current world champion Francesco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the final moments of the Aragon Grand Prix on Sunday.
After struggling with a slow start once again, Bagnaia attempted to overtake the Spanish rider by taking advantage of a wide turn at the left-hand Turn 12, with just over 5 laps remaining.
The Italian rider was slightly ahead and on the optimal racing path as he cut in front of the Gresini rider heading into the next right turn.
Marquez ended up stuck on the inside and collided with the rear of the red bike, causing both riders and their bikes to tumble across the gravel.
Bagnaia ended up trapped beneath Marquez’s bike as they crashed, but luckily, both riders managed to walk away unharmed.
The FIM Stewards promptly launched an investigation into the incident, interviewing both riders individually following the race.
On Sunday evening, the Stewards declared that they would be taking 'no further action' and provided an explanation for their decision.
The event involving Bagnaia #1 and Marquez #73 on the 18th lap at the 13th turn was investigated and reviewed after the race.
The FIM MotoGP Stewards spoke with both riders to understand their views on the incident. They also examined various broadcast footage, other available images, and machine data.
At the hearing, both riders mentioned that the traction outside the main racing line was challenging. According to the Stewards, this issue played a role in limiting the riders' options to avoid a collision.
After reviewing all aspects of the situation, the FIM MotoGP Stewards concluded that there was no definitive evidence to hold either rider mainly accountable for the incident.
Alex's teammate and sibling, Marc Marquez, clinched victory in the race, while second-place finisher Jorge Martin enters next weekend's Misano round with a 23-point advantage over Bagnaia.
