Augusto Fernandez is expected to become part of an enlarged Yamaha MotoGP test team in 2025.
Fabio Quartararo supports Augusto Fernandez for the role of Yamaha MotoGP test rider in 2025.
With no spot available at Tech3 KTM for the next season, former Moto2 champion Fernandez's prospects for a full-time career in the top-tier class seem uncertain.
In the meantime, Yamaha is looking for an additional test rider to accompany Cal Crutchlow, who is presently injured.
Yamaha World Superbike rider and former MotoGP competitor Remy Gardner recently took over for Crutchlow in two MotoGP races, stepping in for Alex Rins in Germany and participating as a wild-card entrant at Silverstone.
Gardner is enthusiastic about remaining a full-time WorldSBK competitor next year. According to Motomatters.com, Quartararo mentioned at the Red Bull Ring that he has been advocating for several months to bring in a test rider who has recent MotoGP racing experience and a strong desire to compete.
"In my opinion, I've been advocating for Augusto for several months now."
The 2021 world champion mentioned that Fernandez might take advantage of wild-card M1 entries to attempt a revival of his MotoGP career.
"Next year, with four Yamahas, if he maintains his speed, he definitely has the chance to return to the championship," Quartararo stated. "Therefore, it's crucial to identify a rider who genuinely desires to come back and provide accurate feedback."
Fernandez confessed that he initially thought a test rider role would feel like 'retirement.' However, he now believes it could provide a more effective path back to a MotoGP racing position compared to moving to WorldSBK.
"The initial thought I had was about retiring, right? But upon reflection, I realized that this is the best chance to return to this paddock, even more so than moving to World Superbike," remarked the 26-year-old.
"I have a deep affection for Superbike since that's where my journey began… However, I'm not prepared to leave MotoGP just yet."
Aleix Espargaro reached the height of his career at a relatively older age, similar to many other riders. Therefore, I still have time to achieve my goals; I'm certainly not finished yet.
"I plan to approach the next couple of years differently, focusing intensely on improving my performance to become competitive and earn my place again."
"I'm telling Yamaha that they should choose me because I deserve the bike due to my speed."
As of now, no riders have been confirmed for the new Pramac Yamaha team. However, Miguel Oliveira is expected to secure one of the spots, and Jack Miller is also a strong candidate for the other.
Fabio Quartararo and Alex Rins are set to remain with Yamaha's official racing team.
