Fabiano Sterlacchini Poised for Honda Move After Departing KTM: A Strategic Shift for HRC’s MotoGP Ambitions
HRC Rumored to Be in Talks with Ex-KTM MotoGP Technical Chief
Ex-KTM technical chief Fabiano Sterlacchini may join Honda's team
Earlier this year, it was revealed that Fabiano Sterlacchini, who had joined KTM as their technical director at the start of 2023, would be departing from the company. Currently, he is being associated with a potential position within Honda’s MotoGP endeavor.
KTM Sporting Director Pit Beirer announced at the German Grand Prix this year that Sterlacchini would be leaving KTM. He mentioned that the Austrian motorcycle manufacturer and Sterlacchini were unable to come to an agreement on a new contract.
An individual from Italy, previously employed in Ducati's technical division, made a move to KTM towards the close of 2022. Currently, it's being shared by Motorsport.com that he is set to join Honda.
Bringing Sterlacchini on board marks the second major technical acquisition from other brands since 2022 for the team, following Ken Kawauchi's transition to HRC after Suzuki exited MotoGP.
This move marks Honda's inaugural venture into integrating significant engineering expertise from Europe, indicating HRC's adaptation to the MotoGP's growing European influence. In a comparable strategy, Yamaha has previously brought in European talent, with Italian engineer Luca Marmorini coming on board to spearhead engine development. Additionally, Massimo Bartolini made the switch to Yamaha from Ducati, serving as the technical director for the period spanning the 2023 to 2024 seasons.
According to Motorsport.com, should HRC successfully secure an agreement with Sterlacchini, the Italian is not expected to join the Japanese manufacturer before November. Consequently, Sterlacchini's impact on development might not become apparent at Honda until well into the 2025 season, by which time the team is anticipated to retain the testing and development privileges it has this year.
Under the revamped MotoGP concessions framework, Honda, having accumulated fewer than 35% of the total points on offer in 2023, is now granted privileges such as unrestricted private testing at any Grand Prix track, continuous engine improvement throughout the season, the option for two aerodynamic modifications each year, and the possibility of participating in up to six wildcard races annually.
