F1 Feud Heats Up: Toto Wolff Slams Christian Horner for George Russell Comments Amid Red Bull Speculation
Toto Wolff criticizes Christian Horner for causing trouble after he mentions George Russell
Toto Wolff reacts to Christian Horner's recent remarks hinting that George Russell might be a potential candidate for Red Bull.
Toto Wolff has accused his main competitor, Christian Horner, of causing trouble after the Red Bull head suggested that George Russell could be a potential choice.
The driver roster for Red Bull has been a major point of discussion throughout the Singapore Grand Prix weekend due to rumors surrounding Daniel Ricciardo's potential future with the team.
In a Sky interview on Saturday, Horner noted that Russell's contract expires at the close of 2025 and stated that it would be "unwise" not to take this into account.
Horner commented, "Listen, we're open to exploring other options. George Russell's contract expires at the end of next year. It would be unwise not to keep that in mind."
“There are additional skilled drivers whose contracts will also be expiring.”
Horner's remarks are especially intriguing considering Mercedes' fascination with Max Verstappen.
Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli are set to be the drivers for Mercedes next year.
Nevertheless, should Verstappen become available, Wolff could face a difficult choice.
During an interview following Sunday's race, Wolff responded to questions regarding Horner's remarks.
According to Motorsport.com, Wolff mentioned, "I believe he constantly causes trouble; it's all part of the strategy."
"George has always driven for Mercedes and is expected to continue doing so for the foreseeable future. We have a lengthy agreement in place with him."
Wolff emphasizes that Russell and Antonelli represent the "future" for Mercedes, despite past interest in Verstappen.
He mentioned, "These two represent the future. They have been and will continue to be Mercedes drivers. Consequently, we have long-term contracts with George and Kimi that include numerous complex options and provisions."
"Mercedes has consistently been a high-pressure environment, but our current position as a team is that we want to continue with these two drivers."
Verstappen’s contract is valid until the conclusion of 2028, although it is generally known that there are several provisions allowing him to leave earlier.
