Espargaro Dismayed by Lack of Investigation into Martin-Bastianini Clash: A Dangerous Precedent in MotoGP?
Aleix Espargaro expressed his confusion and concern, stating, "I'm at a loss with the decisions being made by the Steward panel. It's an alarming declaration. Honestly, it's hard to wrap my head around it!"
Aleix Espargaro was astonished that the FIM Stewards chose not to look into the final lap incident involving Jorge Martin and Enea Bastianini, which ultimately determined the winner of the Emilia Romagna MotoGP.
Despite both competitors maintaining their balance, the collision caused the front-runner in the race and championship, Martin, to veer off the track, with Bastianini momentarily entering the run-off area as well.
The Ducati team's racer managed to make a comeback and secured a victory with a five-second lead over Martin, who openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the maneuver.
To the astonishment of numerous observers, the Stewards chose not to probe into the incident, a decision that would have otherwise led to a formal justification for issuing or not issuing a penalty.
"Espargaro expressed his confusion and disappointment, questioning the actions of the Steward panel."
"I'm at a loss for words, as one rider made contact with another, leading both to veer off the track, yet there was no initiation of an investigation. It simply doesn't add up."
"Besides the measures taken, what concerns me is the signal being sent to all the competitors – that they can act without repercussions," Espargaro further expressed.
"Making contact with another competitor or veering off the track is permitted, which is a highly risky declaration."
"It's truly hard for me to accept, honestly!"
Espargaro, who is close to Martin and will pass on his Aprilia ride to the existing Pramac competitor for 2025, emphasized that the challenge of passing on a contemporary MotoGP motorcycle was not a concern.
"It's irrelevant. Overtaking motorcycles is challenging, indeed. However, historically, with any motorcycle, there's a possibility of colliding with another racer and veering off the course.
You have the capability to accomplish it today, just as you could have two decades earlier.
"Indeed, passing is challenging. However, if contact is made with another competitor, leading both off the track, it's not an issue with the motorcycles."
Simon Crafar is set to take over from Freddie Spencer as the head of the FIM MotoGP Stewards Panel after this season concludes.
