Enea Bastianini’s Championship Chase Heats Up: Can He Bring the #1 Plate to Tech3 KTM in a Stunning MotoGP Shift?
Is there a chance Enea Bastianini will bring the champion's title to Tech3 KTM in the upcoming season?
The question has been floating around: 'What happens if this year's top racer departs Ducati for a different squad?'… Currently, there's an increased possibility of this scenario unfolding as Enea Bastianini advances closer.
Prior to the Silverstone race, Ducati had a strong chance of retaining the current MotoGP champion for the upcoming season.
Francesco Bagnaia, the defending champion, reclaimed his position at the forefront of the leaderboard, while his soon-to-be teammate Marc Marquez secured the third spot, trailing behind Jorge Martin. Martin is set to make a move to Aprilia in 2025.
However, the tide turned once more at Silverstone, where Enea Bastianini, Bagnaia's departing team-mate, secured an impeccable pair of victories, propelling the soon-to-be Tech3 KTM racer past Marquez. Meanwhile, Martin managed to reclaim the championship lead from Pecco.
"According to what Marc Marquez expressed post-race, Bastianini is invincible on his best day. Pete McLaren, the MotoGP editor for Crash.net, also noted that this occasion, marked by both the Sprint victory and overall weekend performance, was certainly Bastianini's moment,"
"'The Beast' has climbed to third place in the championship standings, surpassing Marquez as of Saturday. Many competitors at Silverstone are highlighting him as a contender for the championship."
Podcast presenter Jordan Moreland remarked, “With Bastianini trailing by just 49 points, anything could happen. Since he's leaving Ducati for KTM the following year, there's reduced motivation for him to adhere to team strategies.”
"McLaren mentioned that Ducati brought him on board two years prior, recognizing his skill. Regrettably, he sustained an injury last year, so his true potential on a factory motorcycle remained unseen. Following that, choices regarding riders for the upcoming year and future were swiftly concluded."
There's been ongoing speculation around the possibility of this year's world champion switching from Ducati to another team. Initially, the conversations largely centered on Jorge Martin potentially moving to Aprilia. However, now the situation seems even more precarious with Bastianini also appearing to be on the verge of leaving.
"In the meantime, Bagnaia experienced a fall during the Sprint, leading to the conclusion of his streak of four consecutive grand prix victories on Sunday, opening up the competition once again."
Moreland mentioned, "Jorge Martin has reclaimed his position at the forefront of the World Championship. This comes as the ideal comeback following the incident that occurred prior to the summer hiatus."
Indeed, there was a significant amount of inquiry on Thursday regarding the issues at Sachsenring, with many asking if the cause was known and if measures were in place to prevent a recurrence. Martin was reluctant to delve into specifics but suggested that they might have identified a potential reason or solution.
Dominating the practice session on Friday likely set the stage for his successful weekend, quickly returning to dominate the timing charts. While he didn't surpass Bastianini, he managed to score more points than Pecco in both events, reclaiming his position as the championship leader.
"He took the necessary action to quickly counteract his significant error."
"Discussing errors, Moreland mentioned that Bagnaia crashed during the Sprint but managed to secure a third-place finish in the Grand Prix. He described it as a successful recovery effort."
It's a familiar scenario, isn't it? Pecco fumbles during the Sprint, only to score significantly in Sunday's race. It seems he's repeated that pattern. Despite not having an ideal weekend, he managed to secure a podium finish in the primary race, mitigating the impact on a day when he couldn't match the speed of Bastianini and Martin.
"One must maximize such days, and despite Marquez narrowing the gap towards the finish, he secured a spot on the podium. However, his streak of Sunday victories has come to an end, indicating a competitive race for the championship with several contenders, including Martin and his Ducati teammate."
On Sunday, Aprilia's Aleix Espargaro stood out as the sole rider not on a Ducati among the leading eight.
Maverick Vinales, as a team member, continues to be the highest-ranked non-Ducati rider in the world championship, positioned in fifth place, 111 points behind Martin.
