Enea Bastianini Reflects on Austrian MotoGP Sprint: ‘Too Aggressive’ Start Costs Podium Finish
Enea Bastianini admits being "too aggressive," believes podium was achievable 'without the errors'
Enea Bastianini stated, "I was overly aggressive today, particularly during the first lap."
Enea Bastianini, who has won twice at Silverstone, faced a challenging race as he had to recover from ninth position following an early error during the Austrian MotoGP Sprint.
The Ducati factory rider believed he could have finished on the podium if he hadn't been 'overly aggressive' during the first lap, as he was trying to quickly make up for starting in seventh position on the grid.
Bastianini was vying for the fourth position when he went off track at the Turn 2 chicane, causing him to fall back to the lower end of the top ten standings.
With just four laps remaining, the Italian racer was still in seventh place. However, in a characteristic late-race surge, he managed to overtake Jack Miller and secure fourth position, ending up a mere two seconds behind Aleix Espargaro, who took the last spot on the podium.
Bastianini admitted that his strategy today was overly aggressive, particularly during the first lap.
“I felt anxious as I began slightly behind the others and tried to accelerate right from the beginning. I made an error at Turn 2, went off track, and ended up in ninth place.
"However, my performance since then has exceeded my expectations. I felt considerably better than I did yesterday and even this morning."
"I had significant trouble with the front tire, but finishing in fourth place is still a positive outcome. I was very near to Aleix and had a real chance at securing a podium spot – it could have been achievable if not for the errors!"
Bastianini, famous for his ability to preserve his tyres, was clocking lap times that were half a second faster than Espargaro's in the final stages of the race, and he was keeping pace with the front-runners Francesco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin.
Marc Marquez's accident has resulted in Bastianini leading the Gresini rider by 19 points for third place in the world championship. However, Bastianini has fallen 52 points behind his teammate Bagnaia.
