End of an Era: Daniel Ricciardo’s F1 Journey Concludes as Liam Lawson Takes Over RB Seat Mid-Season
RB has officially announced that Daniel Ricciardo will not complete the 2024 F1 season, as his spot has been taken by Liam Lawson.
RB has officially announced that Liam Lawson will take over Daniel Ricciardo's seat for the remainder of the 2024 F1 season.
The decision, anticipated following clear indications that Singapore would serve as Ricciardo's heartfelt goodbye to F1, will be implemented starting from the United States Grand Prix.
Red Bull's choice to remove Ricciardo from their racing team concludes a 14-season, 257-race journey for the 35-year-old Australian racer, during which he secured eight grand prix victories.
This also means Ricciardo must come to terms with the fact that his dream of making a comeback to the top-tier Red Bull team, which he departed from in late 2018, is effectively dashed.
In what appears to be his last move in Formula 1, he aided Max Verstappen's effort to secure a fourth consecutive world championship. He did this by taking the bonus point for the quickest lap from McLaren's Lando Norris during the Singapore race.
"The entire team at VCARB wants to express our gratitude to Daniel for his dedication and effort over the previous two seasons," said RB team principal Laurent Mekies.
Daniel has contributed significantly to the team by bringing his extensive expertise and skill, paired with an outstanding mindset. This has played a key role in nurturing and strengthening a close-knit team dynamic. Off and on the track, Daniel has consistently embodied the qualities of a true gentleman, always accompanied by his infectious smile.
"His absence will be felt, yet he will forever occupy a cherished spot in the Red Bull family."
Red Bull's backup racer, Lawson, is set to occupy the open seat at Red Bull Racing, teaming up with Yuki Tsunoda, who has shown better performance than Ricciardo during their time as teammates.
The young New Zealander, aged 22, filled in as a racer for Red Bull during five competitions last season following Ricciardo's hand injury from an accident, which occurred just two events into his Formula 1 return.
In his short stint in F1 in 2023, Lawson made a significant impact and is now poised to vie for a potential seat at Red Bull, given the ambiguity surrounding Sergio Perez's position after this season concludes. "I want to also extend a warm welcome to Liam," Mekies continued. "He's familiar with our team, having driven for us the previous season and demonstrated resilience in challenging situations, making his integration a smooth process.
"It's wonderful to witness emerging talent within the Red Bull team advancing to the next level. We are eager to concentrate and dedicate ourselves to the remainder of the season."
