Ducati’s Dilemma: Can They Woo Back Lost Talents Ahead of 2027 MotoGP Regulation Overhaul?
Could riders who have left Ducati be lured back by the 2027 regulation changes? Will those who were previously overlooked consider returning when the new rules take effect in 2027?
Ducati has been cautioned that the real impact of losing multiple young riders may not be seen until 2027.
In three years, the upcoming MotoGP rules will take effect, offering optimism to other manufacturers about starting their own periods of dominance.
Currently, Ducati is leading the way and aims to retain the championship title next year with Marc Marquez joining Pecco Bagnaia on their factory team.
Opting for Marquez to ride the prestigious red bike has led to Enea Bastianini moving to Tech3 KTM, Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi transferring to Aprilia, and the Pramac team aligning with Yamaha.
Marquez, on the other hand, will be the second most senior rider on the lineup next year.
"It will be painful for young riders, and they will feel let down," said broadcaster Simon Crafar regarding Ducati's major decision about their 2025 motorcycle.
“However, from another perspective, Ducati is aiming to secure the championship title.
"It's the most powerful duo we've seen in years. They have the highest likelihood of victory, as they possess the most robust equipment."
"It's fair to say that they've angered the riders."
Bagnaia and Marquez have signed contracts that last until the close of 2026, just before the introduction of new regulations.
Ducati might aim to re-sign Martin, Bezzecchi, or Bastianini in 2027 by offering them the top-performing motorcycle in the sport.
“When the moment arrives to find a replacement for Marc or Pecco, having the top-performing bike makes riders eager to join your team. That’s when you renegotiate,” commented Crafar.
"It's a harsh reality! That's just the way things are. I completely get why they've chosen to be strict, but they're focused on achieving their goal."
However, Ducati has been informed that if competing manufacturers develop remarkable projects for 2027 and the future, riders such as Martin and Bastianini may not be interested in returning to the company that let them go this year.
Crafar stated: “What if they fail to bring the top-performing bike in 2027 under the new regulations?
"This could be somewhat more challenging…"
Ducati has made a significant gamble by signing eight-time world champion Marquez.
The choice they made has led to the loss of a significant amount of talent.
Ducati has affirmed that they will maintain their dedication to nurturing young talent, even after signing Marquez, and highlight the arrival of Fermin Aldeguer as evidence of this commitment.
However, the progress of the Desmosedici must carry on behind the scenes, no matter which well-known riders are signed.
