Nicolo Bulega crashes out, allowing Marc Marquez to overtake in the Ducati Race of Champions
Francesco Bagnaia emerged victorious in the main event, while Marc Marquez secured a podium finish at the last moment
It was always improbable that Marc Marquez would experience a low-key debut at World Ducati Week.
He secured a spot on the podium during the Lenovo Race of Champions on Saturday by making a decisive move at the final turn.
Nicolo Bulega was on track to finish in third place, but in a dramatic turn of events, he crashed just before the race ended.
While Bulega was seated in the gravel, making gestures with his arms, Marquez seized the opportunity to secure third place.
"It's unfortunate that Bulega crashed; I'm not sure if we made contact," Marquez remarked.
"However, we shall stand on the podium side by side."
"We believe we entertained the fans well. What truly matters is that we enjoyed ourselves."
As previously mentioned, it seemed there was a collision between the two. However, Márquez claims he didn't notice any contact. We'll wait to hear Bulega's perspective. The television footage wasn't very clear either 🫣— Crash MotoGP (@crash_motogp) July 27, 2024
One wonders what the Ducati management team is thinking, as they likely wished that Saturday’s events would pass without any of their riders crashing.
In the incident with Marquez, Bulega slid out of the race despite there being no signs of any foul play.
This year's World Ducati Week marks Marquez's debut at the event, following his departure from Honda last year. His participation comes as he is set to join Francesco Bagnaia as a factory MotoGP rider next season.
The dynamic between Bagnaia and Marquez is already being closely examined.
The highlight of World Ducati Week at the Misano circuit was the race held on Saturday.
It united Ducati racers from MotoGP, World Superbikes, and British Superbikes.
They were on Panigale V4s, the latest motorcycles that were introduced earlier this week.
Francesco Bagnaia clinched victory in the Lenovo Race of Champions after surpassing Andrea Iannone, who had started in pole position, during the first lap.
Throughout the majority of the 10-lap race, Iannone pressured Bagnaia, compelling him to maintain a defensive stance. It wasn't until the final part of the race that the MotoGP champion managed to break free and increase his lead
Jorge Martin had a rough beginning, dropping to the rear of the pack but managed to come back and secure a ninth-place finish.
