Davide Brivio Tackles New Challenges with Ai Ogura in MotoGP: Navigating the Perils of Rising Stars in Independent Teams
Davide Brivio acknowledges potential risk with Ai Ogura's MotoGP agreement
Davide Brivio: "Indeed, there's a certain risk involved in this choice, being an Independent team…"
Davide Brivio is renowned for his ability to identify upcoming talents in MotoGP.
The Italian was responsible for introducing several victors, including Maverick Vinales and Alex Rins, along with the 2020 world champion Joan Mir, to their first major races as he led the Suzuki initiative.
Currently serving as the team principal for Trackhouse, the Italian has chosen Moto2 championship hopeful Ai Ogura to join the Aprilia satellite team in 2025.
Brivio highlighted that bringing on a new recruit is considered a long-term endeavor, without any immediate expectations in the first year.
However, there's a new risk that wasn't present before.
If Ogura or his teammate, Raul Fernandez, meet the expectations set by Brivio, they could become prime candidates for factory teams, drawing attention from those looking to recruit talented riders from Trackhouse.
"Having a newcomer on the team is challenging because we are aware that we must go through a year without anticipating any outcomes," Brivio explained.
"Allow Ogura to have fun and gain experience. Then, attempt to observe if you can catch any moments of brilliance."
"Perhaps there's been one Free Practice session that turned out well, and one qualifying round that wasn't too terrible."
"You attempt to comprehend, to notice clues as you progress. Then, in the second or third years, you strive to create something."
"Indeed, opting for this path carries its risks for an Independent squad," Brivio elaborated.
"The circumstances have changed. When we brought on Vinales, Rins, and Mir, we were operating as a factory team for Suzuki, focused on nurturing talent for future factory riders."
"Now that we're a standalone team, there's always the risk that if he proves to be valuable, perhaps by 2027, someone might attempt to poach him from us."
"Alright, we'll endeavor to bring him joy, understanding that it's a plan set for the mid-term. I'm aware of the potential hazards involved."
"Our aim is to foster a positive atmosphere for him, prioritizing the maintenance of a competitive motorcycle and persuading Raul and Ai to remain on our team for an extended period."
"Despite the difficulty, as factory teams usually get a response when they reach out, it's still an opportunity we're ready to tackle!"
Ogura might join two other newcomers in next year's MotoGP lineup, with Fermin Aldeguer expected to secure a spot at Gresini and Somkiat Chantra being a strong candidate for LCR.
