David Croft Takes a Break: Introducing Harry Benjamin, the New Voice at the F1 Austrian Grand Prix
What's the reason for David Croft's absence from the commentary booth at the F1 Austrian Grand Prix? Introducing his stand-in, Harry Benjamin, but who exactly is he?
David Croft will be absent from the commentary team for the upcoming race at the Red Bull Ring this weekend.
Since the 2012 Australian Grand Prix, Croft has consistently served as the principal commentator for Sky.
His unavailability for this weekend was expected, as Croft had already disclosed it before the season began.
Croft will make way for Imola, Austria, and Azerbaijan, allowing Harry Benjamin to take over the lead role for those events.
In February, the 53-year-old announced his intentions to take a break, especially with an upcoming wedding on his agenda.
Earlier this year, Croft conveyed to The Independent, "It's essentially about maintaining vitality throughout the entire season. I'm not becoming any younger."
I've made numerous sacrifices for my professional life. Now, I aim to dedicate more time to my loved ones instead of being miles away from them. Also, with my wedding happening this year, I have a ceremony to plan!
"I'd also like the opportunity to relax at home and watch a race. It's about enjoyment for me. Possibly, by not doing commentary, I might pick up a thing or two. When I'm observing, I can notice certain aspects – I'm interested in experiencing the race from the viewer's perspective."
Who is Harry Benjamin?
Familiar to followers of Crash.net, Benjamin has previously taken the reins of the MotoGP podcast.
Over the years, he has provided commentary for Formula 2, Formula 3, and the Porsche Supercup, and presently serves as the F1 commentator for BBC Radio 5 Live.
In 2023, Benjamin also contributed to Sky Sports F1's children-focused broadcasts.
Anticipating his first appearance, Benjamin expressed on the recent Sky Sports F1 podcast episode, "Absolutely thrilled. It's certainly a significant challenge, but I'm eager to take it on."
"Achieving this at Imola, and next to Karun as well, feels truly special. I'm deeply honored."
Benjamin is set to join former F1 racer Karun Chandhok at Imola, as Martin Brundle will once again be missing from the lineup.
