Daniel Ricciardo’s Struggle: An Undignified End to a Storied F1 Career?
Daniel Ricciardo's difficulties described as "humiliating" amid assertions of a 'final race'
"He seems to have given up."
According to Martin Brundle, Daniel Ricciardo is set to lose his spot as a race driver following this weekend’s F1 Singapore Grand Prix.
Daniel Ricciardo faced questions about whether the Singapore Grand Prix would be his final race.
He confessed that Red Bull might decide to swap him out for Liam Lawson on their secondary team during the upcoming race in Austin.
Sky Sports' Brundle mentioned that, as far as he knows, Daniel will not be driving in Austin at the upcoming grand prix, but he will stay within the Red Bull team.
"There are several reasons why they are interested in observing Liam Lawson's performance."
"Had Daniel performed better this season, it would have significantly impacted not only the secondary squad at RB but also the main team at Red Bull."
"It hasn't turned out the way he hoped. I don't think he'll be driving in Austin."
Race car driver Jamie Chadwick emphasized that Ricciardo has experienced challenging years recently.
“It always feels that way,” she mentioned. “In recent years, as he himself acknowledged, he has been continuously struggling to hold onto his position.”
"This marks the initial instance where he has acknowledged his responsibility. There are no justifications or attempts to conceal the truth."
"He carries an air of defeat."
‘Ricciardo’s Struggles Deemed 'Undignified'
Brundle commented: “I hold the utmost respect for him both as a Formula 1 driver and as an individual.
"Any driver in the 74-year history of Formula 1 would be proud to have some of his race wins on their résumé."
"To be truthful, I will feel somewhat relieved when his suffering eventually ends, whenever that moment arrives in the future."
"McLaren compensated him for not driving their car in races."
"In some ways, it feels awkward and lacks dignity."
Daniel Ricciardo was let go from McLaren at the conclusion of the 2022 season after failing to match the performance of teammate Lando Norris, leading to his replacement by Oscar Piastri.
He was initially not part of the 2023 lineup, but he returned to the race mid-season, taking over for Nyck de Vries at AlphaTauri due to de Vries' lackluster performance.
An injury to Ricciardo created an opportunity for Lawson, who performed admirably, but the seasoned Australian driver managed to retain his full-time racing position for this season.
He aspired to secure a promotion to the Red Bull team, but now it appears he hasn't even managed to keep his position with RB.
Red Bull has chosen Lawson as their next driver, offering him a significant opportunity. He will be in the company of other young talents like Kimi Antonelli, Franco Colapinto, and Ollie Bearman, who are also being tested at high levels.
"This has quickly turned into a fashion industry," Brundle remarked. "There will be a trend of placing young drivers in the spotlight for some time."
"There are many highly talented F2 drivers who haven't yet had their opportunity and are feeling significant frustration."
"Now appears to be the ideal moment to prepare for the future. This is the right time to act. Waiting until 2026 to bring in young talent would be unwise, especially with significant changes coming to chassis and power units."
