Daniel Ricciardo’s F1 Career: A Tale of Unmatched Potential and the Harsh Reality of Modern Racing
Key factor identified behind Daniel Ricciardo's harsh downturn in F1 performance
A fresh hypothesis could shed light on the reasons behind Daniel Ricciardo's drop in racing competitiveness
Daniel Ricciardo's struggles to adapt to the newest Formula 1 car models have been pointed out as a key factor in his decline.
Liam Lawson is set to immediately take over Ricciardo's spot at Red Bull's affiliated team, RB.
In an emotional goodbye in Singapore last weekend, Ricciardo appeared to have raced his last Grand Prix in F1.
"Journalist Sam Power from Australia's Channel 10 commented on the F1 Nation podcast, stating, 'The vehicles he maneuvered with such incredible skill represented an entirely different approach to car design.'"
The regulations introduced in 2022 feature extremely rigid suspension and a completely flat floor.
"Before, he had become accustomed to driving a car designed by Adrian Newey, characterized by its significant rake and considerable amount of roll – a stark contrast to what he's used to."
"It's commonly mentioned that he's been attempting to adjust the way he drives."
"I'd speculate that it primarily conflicts with the 2022 vehicles and their overarching design principles, more than anything else."
Ricciardo never recaptured his peak Red Bull form during his time with Renault, McLaren, and AlphaTauri/RB.
Initially, he was ousted from his Formula 1 position after McLaren let him go, but he was only out of action for half a season before Red Bull stepped in to save his career, placing him in their AlphaTauri team.
Initially, Ricciardo made a strong impression, but an injury opened the door for Lawson to temporarily step in and demonstrate his clear potential to the world.
"What causes him the most pain? It seems as though he's perpetually been battling adversity, contrary to expectations," journalist Lawrence Barretto observed.
"Last year in Zandvoort, he injured his hand just as he was beginning. As a result, he was unable to participate in many races. The person who might take his place is the same individual who performed admirably stepping in for Ricciardo during his absence due to injury last year."
He initiated this year facing challenges with the car not being up to his comfort standards, albeit being competitive.
Yuki Tsunoda gathered a significant number of points. However, when [Ricciardo] made a move, the car's direction changed. He ended up in 11th and 12th places, which are respectable results but since they don’t earn points, they don’t appear to be remarkable.
"It's regrettable that his performance has improved just as the car isn't performing well."
"In Singapore, Yuki failed to earn any points. This suggests that the car wasn't yet in a position to achieve points, indicating that he performed to the best of his abilities given his starting position.
"Luck hasn't been on his side. However, numerous Formula 1 drivers will end their careers expressing the same sentiment."
The most challenging aspect for him to move past will be the realization that the ideal conditions never presented themselves.
"Until the break in August, Red Bull was keen on having him take over Perez's spot. They even held a discussion regarding this matter.
"What has happened in the span of four races to cause such a dramatic reversal?"
"In such an environment, surrounded by many familiar faces, within an operational framework adept at rapid problem-solving and swift issue identification, he sensed that. And it seems Christian Horner recognized this too, which is why he offered him such strong support."
"He will perpetually experience a sense of incompleteness."
