Critical Tumbles and Tire Dynamics: The Razor-Edge Battle for the 2024 MotoGP Championship
Might accidents determine the outcome of the closely contested MotoGP championship battle?
What are the reasons behind the accidents that might determine the winner of the 2024 championship?
Examining the collision data from the first 10 events of the 2024 MotoGP season reveals that the leading trio in the rankings have experienced relatively few accidents.
Undoubtedly, for Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia, who are separated by a mere three points at the summit of the standings, falls at pivotal times during competitions have played a significant role in maintaining the tightness of the championship battle.
Throughout the current season, Bagnaia has experienced five crashes, whereas Martin has hit the ground on seven occasions. Enea Bastianini, who is in third place, matches Bagnaia's count with five crashes, while Marc Marquez, in fourth position, has encountered 15 crashes this year, which could be seen as reasonable considering his efforts to adjust to riding the Ducati.
During the recent British GP, Bagnaia experienced his fifth racing mishap of the year, losing control and crashing from fourth place in the sprint race. This incident follows a series of setbacks including crashing while leading in the Barcelona sprint, a fall during Le Mans qualifying, an accident in the Jerez sprint, and an encounter with Marquez at the Portuguese GP.
Considering the circumstances of his crash, Bagnaia has missed out on accumulating at least 34 points in his total score. On the other hand, Martin has experienced falls in races only three times, yet these incidents have had a significant impact, especially since two occurred while he was in the lead of grand prix races. As a result, he has forfeited 57 points.
Incorporating those into their existing championship total, Martin's score would reach 298 points compared to 272, expanding their lead from three to 26 points.
This illustrates the significant effect that these accidents have had on the championship race. At its widest, the difference between Martin and Bagnaia reached 44 points following Bagnaia's crash during the Barcelona sprint.
However, his streak of four Grand Prix wins afterward, which featured two sprint/Grand Prix victories, along with two accidents involving Martin, shifted the tide, giving the current two-time world champion a 10-point lead as they entered the summer hiatus.
His tumble during the Silverstone sprint and the subsequent slower speed relative to Martin in the grand prix essentially negated all his efforts.
The intense rivalry among MotoGP's elite competitors is a significant factor, but the introduction of Michelin's 2024 rear tires has also played a crucial role.
The notion that tires might determine the winner of a championship is something no one is eager to confront.
The lead-up to the previous year's final was dominated by the significant threat that a penalty related to tyre pressure might disqualify either Martin or Bagnaia, with the former's prospects severely impacted by an issue with the rear tyre in the Qatar GP.
However, this situation underscores the nature of a championship with only one tire provider. It's not to suggest that Michelin's involvement in the recent spate of accidents affecting the championship race is due to any defect in its newer, more adhesive rear tires. On the contrary, the ongoing breaking of lap records at various circuits is evidence of their quality.
At Silverstone, Bagnaia elaborated that the additional traction from the rear tire is causing more pressure on the front tire during braking, thereby elevating the likelihood of accidents.
"First off, Bagnaia mentioned that the latest rear tires are impressive, yet they're leading to more crashes due to the rear overpowering the front."
"Today, in the race, the top three competitors crossed the finish line a whole eight seconds ahead of the fourth-place runner, showcasing the remarkable speed of some of the athletes."
"I believe this is an unprecedented event, and it's incredibly remarkable. I adore it. However, there's always the possibility of an accident occurring."
He also mentioned that, in theory, this alters the way one would ride, "but in the heat of the race, when the competition is tight, we always seem to forget."
Given the developments witnessed during the initial half of the 2024 season, it seems improbable that the situation will alter, with every forthcoming match playing a crucial role in determining the outcome of this year's world championship.
