Casey Stoner’s Iconic 2007 MotoGP Championship Ducati Sells for Over £400k at Silverstone Auction
Sale price unveiled for Casey Stoner's 2007 Ducati at auction event
2003 and 2007 MotoGP Ducatis fetch high prices at Silverstone auction
The Ducati GP7, ridden by Casey Stoner to achieve both his and the Italian brand's inaugural MotoGP world championship, fetched more than £400,000 at an auction sale.
In his second year at the top level, Stoner transitioned to the factory Ducati team, after initially competing in 2006 with the LCR Honda team.
The Australian racer made an impressive start on the GP7, securing a win at the season's first race, the Qatar Grand Prix, and then went on to claim nine additional victories en route to winning the championship.
Stoner's achievements in motorcycle racing were remarkable, outshining the closest Ducati competitor, his teammate Loris Capirossi, who was seventh in the rankings – a significant 201 points behind and had only one victory to his name.
The initial motorcycle to clinch a championship in the 800cc category marked Ducati's final victory until 2022, when Francesco Bagnaia achieved his maiden world championship riding the GP22.
Ahead of the Iconic Auctioneers sale at Silverstone the previous weekend, the 220bhp GP7, featuring a tubular steel trellis chassis, an aluminum swingarm, and Ohlins suspension in both the front and rear, underwent a full restoration.
The bicycle was purchased for £402,500 and described as "a highly practical option with easily obtainable spare parts," suggesting it could be a suitable choice for the buyer's track day activities.
Capirossi's 2003 Ducati Auctioned
Additionally, at the Silverstone auction, another significant motorcycle from Ducati's MotoGP history, the GP3, was auctioned off.
Ducati debuted in the premier MotoGP category during the second season of the 990cc four-stroke period, marking their first foray into the championship with this motorcycle.
Piloted by Troy Bayliss and Loris Capirossi, it was Capirossi who secured a third-place finish, earning Ducati a podium spot in their first MotoGP appearance at the Japanese Grand Prix.
Bayliss secured another top-three finish at the Spanish Grand Prix, while Capirossi achieved a runner-up position at the Italian Grand Prix.
In the subsequent Catalan GP, Capirossi achieved a monumental initial victory for Ducati in MotoGP.
Ducati ended up securing the runner-up position in the constructors' rankings, trailing behind the leading Honda, which clinched victory in every race except for the Catalan GP, where Capirossi triumphed.
The 2003 GP3, which was auctioned off last weekend at Silverstone, was once owned by Capirossi and fetched a sale price of £201,250.
Additionally, it was described as "a highly practical instance."
