Casey Stoner’s Championship-Winning 2007 Ducati Fetches Over £400,000 at Auction, Alongside Capirossi’s Historic 2003 Model
Casey Stoner's 2007 Ducati auction price unveiled
MotoGP Ducatis from 2003 and 2007 fetch significant sums at Silverstone sale
The 2007 Ducati GP7, ridden by Casey Stoner to secure both his and the Italian brand's inaugural MotoGP world championship, fetched more than £400,000 at a recent auction.
For his second year in the top tier, Stoner moved to the factory Ducati team after initially competing in 2006 with the LCR Honda team.
The Australian rider made an impressive start on the GP7, clinching the win at the season's first race, the Qatar Grand Prix, and then proceeded to secure nine more wins en route to claiming the championship title.
Stoner's achievements on the motorcycle were remarkable, outshining the next Ducati competitor in the rankings, his teammate Loris Capirossi, who was in seventh place, 201 points behind and had only achieved one win.
The initial motorcycle to clinch a championship in the 800cc category marked Ducati's final victory in this class until Francesco Bagnaia captured the world championship on the GP22 in 2022.
Ahead of the Iconic Auctioneers sale at Silverstone the previous weekend, the GP7, boasting 220bhp and equipped with a steel trellis frame, aluminum swingarm, and Ohlins suspension both in the front and the back, underwent a full restoration.
The bicycle was purchased for £402,500 and was described as "a highly practical model with easily accessible spare parts," suggesting it could be an ideal choice for the purchaser's track day activities.
Capirossi's 2003 Ducati Auctioned
Another significant motorcycle in Ducati's MotoGP history, the GP3, was also auctioned off at Silverstone.
Ducati debuted its initial MotoGP motorcycle, joining the top-tier racing category during the second season of the 990cc four-stroke period.
Piloted by Troy Bayliss and Loris Capirossi, it was Capirossi who clinched a third-place finish, securing a podium spot for Ducati in their first MotoGP appearance at the Japanese Grand Prix.
Bayliss secured another podium finish at the Spanish Grand Prix, followed by Capirossi achieving second place at the Italian Grand Prix.
In the subsequent Catalan Grand Prix, Capirossi achieved a landmark victory for Ducati, marking their first win in MotoGP.
Ducati ended up securing the runner-up position in the manufacturers' rankings, trailing behind the leading Honda, which claimed victory in every race except for the Catalan GP where Capirossi triumphed.
Last weekend at Silverstone, the 2003 GP3 previously owned by Capirossi was auctioned off, fetching a sale price of £201,250.
It was also described as "a highly practical instance".
