Can Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin’s Cordial MotoGP Title Duel Endure the Pressure?
How long can Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin keep their MotoGP title fight friendly?
"Why should I be upset with him?"
In the past few years, MotoGP championship fights have been marked by a notably polite and respectful attitude.
The intense competition among Francesco Bagnaia, Fabio Quartararo, and Aleix Espargaro was a highlight, with Espargaro and Quartararo being neighbors in Andorra and Quartararo being highly admired by Espargaro’s son.
Last year, the competition between Ducati teammates Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin never truly intensified. They both had identical equipment and received equal backing from their manufacturer.
After 11 out of 20 rounds, the 2024 title competition appears to be following a similar pattern. At least for the moment.
Bagnaia reclaimed the top position in the championship by winning twice at the Red Bull Ring, but his lead over Martin in the rankings is a slim five points.
Martin struggled with a thumb injury that he sustained in an unusual shower mishap on Friday night. This injury slightly affected his performance in the sprint, but not as significantly as a long lap penalty he received for not yielding one second while navigating the Turn 2 chicane early in his duel with Bagnaia. In the grand prix, Martin ultimately lacked the capability to compete fiercely against Bagnaia.
"Considering everything that took place over the weekend, I have to say I'm pleased," Martin remarked. "However, I'm also feeling a bit frustrated because I believe we're very competitive and have everything needed to win races, yet Pecco is still achieving those results."
"It's only five points added to his championship score; it's not that significant. What truly matters is that my poor performance still resulted in a second-place finish, which is definitely crucial. My time will come."
In reality, he was quite close to competing for the win. The pole position holder had an average lap time of 1 minute 30.288 seconds over the 28-lap race, while Bagnaia was just 0.122 seconds faster on average throughout the event.
This resulted in a 3.232-second difference by the time they crossed the finish line. However, it was in the nuances that Bagnaia truly excelled.
Bagnaia consistently recorded lap times in the 1 minute 29 seconds range from his second to fourteenth lap, and once more on his sixteenth lap with his factory team Ducati. Martin, on the other hand, maintained this pace from his third to twelfth lap before his times dropped to the 1 minute 30 seconds range. For their quickest laps, Bagnaia clocked a 1 minute 29.519 seconds, while Martin posted a 1 minute 29.621 seconds.
Importantly, Bagnaia set himself apart in the initial stages of the grand prix. Following a short skirmish on the second lap, Bagnaia took the lead. Between laps two and eight, Bagnaia consistently maintained an average speed that was 0.066 seconds faster than Martin’s.
While it may not seem significant, the 0.395-second lead Bagnaia secured by the end of the eighth lap was crucial in enabling the current world champion to dominate the race.
Bagnaia gradually pulled away from Martin, his impressive early speed compensating for the traction issues he encountered later on as his rear medium tire wore out. Given the worries about tire pressures in Austria, maintaining a good position on the track is more crucial at the Red Bull Ring than at many other locations.
Bagnaia secured the win by a narrow margin, something Martin observed closely. Martin commented, “I believe we need to adjust our strategy slightly. It's evident that he has strong confidence at the start of the race with a full tank, allowing him to maintain the lead.”
"In my opinion, leading after three or four laps means you're 90% likely to win. Later on, when my front tire had regained some grip, I attempted to catch up, but the gap was too wide to bridge."
In the most recent sessions, Bagnaia has frequently appeared near the top of the leaderboard on Fridays. However, throughout his time as champion, he has usually focused on preparing for the race during these initial practice runs. This emphasis on race preparation was particularly noticeable in Austria, where he worked extensively with a full fuel tank.
"I put in a lot of effort to achieve this sensation at the beginning with a full fuel tank," Bagnaia commented following the grand prix.
"We always start with a full tank of fuel, which can be a disadvantage at times, but also an advantage because it prepares us for the race. Overtaking on this track is challenging since braking a meter too late can cause you to go wide. Therefore, maintaining composure and avoiding reckless moves was crucial."
Francesco Bagnaia's victory at the Austrian Grand Prix has brought his total to 25 wins in the premier class, equaling the record set by 1993 500cc world champion Kevin Schwantz. This season alone, Bagnaia has secured seven wins, matching his total for the entire previous year. Despite his impressive performance, the championship race remains closely contested.
"What's the reason for my anger?"
Although their short-lived confrontation on the track didn't have significant consequences, it prompted a question during the Sunday post-race press conference about how the two riders have maintained a solid relationship, even though they are currently the leading competitors in MotoGP.
Martin responded, “It wasn’t only this year, but also last year. We still have many more years ahead to compete against one another.”
“If I put in my maximum effort and he still outperforms me, I see no reason to be upset with him. It’s simply a matter of respect.”
"If everyone behaves respectfully both off and on the track, I'm genuinely pleased for him winning and I hope our relationship remains this positive throughout our lives."
Bagnaia commented, "Respect ensures harmony off the track and fierce competition on it, but always with mutual regard. We've been acquainted for a long time, and I've never comprehended why some riders alter their relationships throughout a championship."
“It’s accurate that working towards a common goal alters [your relationship] somewhat. However, respect must always persist, and it seems like the situation remains unchanged from last year or from our younger days.”
Bagnaia’s remark seems somewhat strange considering who his mentor is and how his interactions with rival riders evolved over time.
Despite being involved in several incidents, Bagnaia has typically shown respect, and it's improbable that this will alter as the 2024 campaign becomes more intense.
However, is it possible for the duo's relationship to stay friendly if the competition for the championship continues to be this tight?
There are a number of factors to take into account. The initial one is the evolving relationship between Martin and Ducati. Although Ducati has openly stated its dedication to backing both, Martin’s upcoming move to Aprilia casts doubt on that commitment.
Currently, Aprilia's performance isn't particularly strong, as evidenced by Maverick Vinales' highest finish being only seventh place in Austria, despite Aleix Espargaro securing a podium in the sprint race. This indicates that the team is not yet in a position to contend for the title. Consequently, Jorge Martin might begin to view 2024 as his most promising opportunity to win a championship in the near future.
If the competition stays close between them, it will definitely alter how he competes against Bagnaia.
From Bagnaia's point of view, engaging in a personal clash with the Pramac rider is largely unnecessary. He possesses something Martin lacks: a secured factory Ducati position for the upcoming year. Moreover, the race in Austria demonstrated that he remains the top rider, albeit by a slim margin.
Will this championship contest stay amicable? It's likely, primarily because Martin stands to lose more than Bagnaia.
