Brivio Faces Risk and Reward: Navigating the ‘Danger’ in Ai Ogura’s MotoGP Journey with Trackhouse
Davide Brivio acknowledges the risks associated with the factory's involvement in Ai Ogura's MotoGP contract.
Davide Brivio stated, "Naturally, this choice carries certain risks since we are an Independent team…"
Davide Brivio is well-known for identifying potential MotoGP champions.
The Italian had earlier introduced Maverick Vinales and Alex Rins, both of whom have won several races, along with 2020 world champion Joan Mir, to their first appearances in the premier class while managing the Suzuki team.
The Italian, now serving as the team principal of Trackhouse, has chosen Moto2 title contender Ai Ogura to join the satellite Aprilia team in 2025.
Brivio highlighted that bringing on a rookie is generally viewed as a long-term commitment, with no immediate expectations for the first year.
However, unlike in previous times, there is now an additional 'risk'.
If Ogura or his teammate Raul Fernandez live up to the potential that Brivio recognizes in them, factory teams will set their sights on recruiting the Trackhouse riders.
Brivio mentioned that having a newcomer on the team is challenging because it means spending a year without expecting significant results.
"Allow Ogura to have fun and gain some experience. Observe closely to see if you can notice any moments of brilliance."
"Possibly one satisfactory Free Practice session and a decent qualifying round."
"You start by attempting to grasp the situation and look for clues as you go. By the second or third year, you begin to create something out of it."
Brivio went on to say, “As an Independent team, this decision does carry some risk.”
"The circumstances have changed. Back then, when we brought in Vinales, Rins, and Mir, we were functioning as a Suzuki factory team with the goal of nurturing factory riders for the long term."
"Since we are now an independent team, there is a risk that if he performs well, someone might attempt to take him from us in 2027."
"Alright, we will aim to ensure his satisfaction, understanding that this is a project for the mid-term. I am aware of the potential risks involved."
"Our aim is to develop a positive atmosphere for him. The crucial aspect is to maintain a competitive motorcycle and to persuade Raul and Ai to remain with our team for as long as we can."
"Although it is quite a difficult task since typically factory teams get a response, we recognize that it's a challenge worth taking on!"
Next year’s MotoGP lineup may feature Ogura as one of three newcomers, with Fermin Aldeguer expected to join Gresini and Somkiat Chantra anticipated to sign with LCR.
