British MotoGP: Jorge Martin Dominates Friday Practice as Marquez Scrapes into Q2 Amidst Drama-Packed Session
British MotoGP: Jorge Martin Dominates Friday Practices, Marc Marquez Secures Q2 Spot
Jorge Martin continues to top the charts at Silverstone with his second successive practice session lead.
Enea Bastianini faced a rough beginning to his second practice session when his GP24 experienced a mechanical failure, causing smoke to emit from the back of the bike.
Marco Bezzecchi soon encountered problems when his GP23 began emitting smoke, seemingly due to an oil-related issue.
Just after moving into second place, Miguel Oliveira almost lost control at the first turn due to a significant front-end shake.
Similar to FP1, Aleix Espargaro was the initial rider to break the 1m 59s mark, whereas Takaaki Nakagami was the first to crash during the session.
Jorge Martin then set an impressive time, distancing himself by nearly four-tenths of a second ahead of Espargaro. Soon after, Fabio Di Giannantonio narrowed the gap, coming within 0.211 seconds of Martin's time.
Next up was the current world champion, Francesco Bagnaia, who made his mark by clocking in a time more than three tenths quicker than Maverick Vinales.
However, Bastianini soon surpassed Bagnaia, overcoming his initial issues to record a time of 1:59.026.
While he didn't manage to secure the leading position, Vinales posted highly competitive lap times, demonstrating that he could challenge both Bastianini and Bagnaia.
Pedro Acosta, one of the initial racers to opt for a soft rear tire, advanced into the top five spots consequently.
Continuing with a fresh hard front tire, Martin was showing strong speed, moving into second place even while using a worn medium rear tire.
Vinales then set the track ablaze with an impressive lap, clocking in a time in the mid-1 minute 58 seconds range, which shattered the previous fastest time.
Martin subsequently matched Vinales with a time in the 1 minute 58 seconds range, but he was unable to challenge the Aprilia racer.
While passing time in the pit lane, Marc Marquez was anticipating joining Martin at the beginning of his next session. However, he ended up with Espargaro for companionship as Martin decided to hang back.
After eventually catching up with Martin, Marquez moved up in the rankings but could only secure seventh place with his recent progress.
Late in the session, Bagnaia managed to shave off two tenths, moving to the top of the leaderboard. However, Martin and Espargaro responded by breaking into the 1 minute 57 second range.
