Bezzecchi Overcomes Injury and Startline Scare for Strong Finish Amid British MotoGP Drama
Marco Bezzecchi expressed frustration over an incident involving Morbidelli, stating it irked him but he has since accepted an apology. He also recounted a startling moment with Binder, mentioning that although it was a challenging situation, he was able to handle it. Bezzecchi speculated that without the initial unease caused by Brad, he might have secured a better position in the race.
Marco Bezzecchi narrowly escaped further mishap at the beginning of Sunday's British MotoGP after previously hurting his right foot in a harsh collision at Turn 1 during the Silverstone Sprint.
Bezzecchi was catapulted off his GP23 after his friend and fellow Academy colleague, Franco Morbidelli — who is set to replace him in VR46 in 2025 — failed to brake in time and collided with the rear of his Desmosedici during Saturday afternoon.
"Bezzecchi mentioned that Morbidelli stopped by to see him post-session to offer his apologies. He acknowledged the error, which naturally frustrated him. However, he accepted the apology, recognizing that it wasn't intentional," Bezzecchi stated.
"Ultimately, all is well."
Morbidelli was penalized by the FIM Stewards with two long lap penalties for 'behaving recklessly on the track, which led to a collision'.
On Sunday, Brad Binder, who began the race two rows in front of Bezzecchi, experienced a significant slowdown due to a clutch problem with his KTM.
"Bezzecchi described a close call, saying, 'I was nearly in a collision with Brad due to a problem with his bike. Then, Jack [Miller] shifted position abruptly, and I nearly collided with him as well. This caused me to lose some ground.'"
The maneuver to avoid a collision caused the Italian racer to lose numerous positions, ending the first lap in 13th place, especially after his Trackhouse team colleagues Raul Fernandez and Miguel Oliveira were eliminated due to crashes further up the field.
Bezzecchi made a comeback by overtaking Fabio Quartararo, Morbidelli, Maverick Vinales, Jack Miller, and ultimately Pedro Acosta.
"In the initial stages of the race, the discomfort was manageable, thanks to the adrenaline rush. However, in the final 6 to 8 laps, I began to experience a decrease in sensation throughout my leg, particularly in my foot," mentioned the 2025 Aprilia team rider.
"Figuring out the extent of rear brake application was quite challenging, which somewhat constrained me. However, aside from that, the race went well."
"The hurt was uncomfortable, yet bearable. The real issue arose from the initial shock, which hindered my progress. Had it not been for the unsettling incident involving Brad, I might have found myself further ahead."
"I believe the main problem was the injury. It wasn't getting any better, but I did my best to persevere."
Fabio di Giannantonio, a member of the team, secured a fifth-place finish.
