Bezzecchi Battles Through Pain and Near Misses: Reflects on Morbidelli Apology and Binder Scare at British MotoGP
Marco Bezzecchi: Frustrated by Morbidelli incident, accepts apology | Binder fright
Marco Bezzecchi: ‘It hurt, but I was able to handle it… If not for the [startline scare] with Brad, I likely could have been further ahead.’
Following an injury to his right foot caused by a harsh collision at Turn 1 during the Silverstone Sprint, Marco Bezzecchi narrowly escaped another accident at the beginning of Sunday’s British MotoGP.
On Saturday afternoon, Bezzecchi was thrown off his GP23 when his friend and fellow Academy member, Franco Morbidelli, who is set to replace him in the VR46 team in 2025, lost control while braking and collided with the rear of Bezzecchi's Desmosedici.
"[Morbidelli] came to see me after the session to apologize. Naturally, I was angry about the mistake. However, it's already in the past, so I accept his apology. I'm convinced it wasn't intentional," Bezzecchi commented.
"Ultimately, it all turned out fine."
The FIM Stewards handed Morbidelli a double long lap penalty due to 'reckless riding that led to a collision'.
On Sunday, Brad Binder, who began the race two rows in front of Bezzecchi, experienced a significant slowdown because of a clutch problem with his KTM.
Bezzecchi recounted how he narrowly avoided a collision with Brad, who was experiencing trouble with his bike. He mentioned that Jack Miller shifted position at the last moment, causing him to nearly crash into Miller as well. Consequently, he had to pull back.
The Italian driver lost several positions due to evasive maneuvers, ending the first lap in 13th place. This happened even though his Trackhouse teammates, Raul Fernandez and Miguel Oliveira, had crashed earlier.
Bezzecchi made a comeback by overtaking Fabio Quartararo, Morbidelli, Maverick Vinales, Jack Miller, and Pedro Acosta in succession.
"The 2025 factory Aprilia rider mentioned that at the start of the race, the pain was manageable due to the adrenaline and other factors. However, in the final 6-8 laps, he began to experience a significant decrease in sensitivity throughout his leg, particularly in his foot."
"It was quite challenging to gauge the amount of rear brake I was applying, which posed a bit of a limitation. However, aside from that, the race went well."
"The pain from the injury was manageable. What really caused an issue was the beginning, as the incident with Brad likely prevented me from being further ahead."
"I believe this was the most significant problem. Although the injury didn't help, I made an effort to persevere."
Teammate Fabio di Giannantonio secured a fifth-place finish.
