Enea Bastianini: Martin's contentious maneuver was the "only option" for securing the Misano MotoGP victory

"It would have been impossible without this opportunity"

Enea Bastianini stated that his “sole option” for victory in the MotoGP Emilia Romagna Grand Prix was to execute his contentious final-lap pass on Jorge Martin.

From the start of the 27-lap race at Misano, Bastianini was a key contender in the fight for victory, steadily increasing the pressure on Martin during the final laps.

During the last lap, Bastianini maneuvered his factory Ducati inside of Martin at Turn 4 with a bold move that resulted in minor contact between the two and forced the Pramac rider significantly off the track.

The incident did not lead to any further measures from the stewards, and Bastianini was confirmed as the winner for the second time in 2024. This win also marked Ducati's 100th victory in MotoGP.

Martin thought there was no space available, whereas Bastianini thinks his maneuver was "on the edge" but felt it was his only chance to secure victory.

"It was a very challenging overtake, but when the opportunity to win arises, you have to seize it," he stated.

"You have to go for it. Sure, it was a bit risky, but ultimately, it was my only option. Without taking that chance, it would have been impossible for me because Martin was really strong on the rest of the track. It was the only opportunity available to me."

He mentioned, "This was likely my only chance since he was incredibly strong in sector three, right after Turn 10."

“I’m not sure of the reason, but by the end of the extended straight, I consistently found myself 0.2 to 0.3 seconds behind. That was my sole chance to attempt to secure the victory.”

The event has sparked differing viewpoints, as Marc Marquez, who secured third place, believes that Bastianini should have been penalized by losing one position for also going off the track at Turn 4.

In any case, Bastianini has now climbed to third place in the rankings and trails Martin by 59 points.

He expressed great excitement over Ducati's 100th Grand Prix victory, adding that it was particularly special because he executed the overtaking maneuver right in front of his fan club, surrounded by pink smoke.

"This has been such a wonderful day for me."
