Francesco Bagnaia clinched victory in the 2024 Austrian MotoGP Sprint race and regained the championship lead following a lengthy lap penalty for his competitor, Jorge Martin.
Bagnaia and Martin both completed the Sprint with 250 points each, but Bagnaia claimed the lead thanks to having more victories.
Marc Marquez, who was comfortably in second place, crashed and allowed Aleix Espargaro to secure a spot on the podium.
Commencing the race from the pole position with a narrow three-point advantage over Bagnaia, despite having an injured thumb from an incident in his motorhome the previous night, Martin went off track at the chicane following a significant stoppie while attempting to maintain his lead over Bagnaia in the second lap.
Bagnaia overtook Martin shortly afterward, but Martin, riding for Pramac, stayed close behind him. However, with 9 laps remaining, Martin received a penalty for not losing at least one second when he took a shortcut.
The extended circuit dropped Martin to second place behind Marc Marquez, and he re-entered the race slightly ahead of Espargaro.
Bagnaia's win was secure from that point, while Martin took back second place after Marquez fell at Turn 3 with 5 laps remaining.
That error unexpectedly landed Espargaro on the podium, despite it being one of the most challenging tracks for both him and the RS-GP.
Silverstone victor Enea Bastianini veered off course during the first lap but managed to recover and secure a fourth-place finish.
The only riders who went with the medium rear tire were those from KTM and Alex Rins. Everyone else selected the soft rear tire and paired it with a medium front tire.
This weekend, test riders Pol Espargaro from KTM, Lorenzo Savadori from Aprilia, and Stefan Bradl from Honda are participating as wild-card entries.
Significant tyre strain at the Sachsenring prompts Michelin to introduce a stronger rear tyre design for the Red Bull Ring.
Updated tire pressure regulations for 2024 dictate that riders must maintain a front tire pressure of at least 1.8 bar for 60% of a Grand Prix race, an increase from the previous 50%, and for 30% of a Sprint race.
The consequence for not achieving this minimum in a Grand Prix is a 16-second time penalty added after the race, or an 8-second penalty for a Sprint or shorter race.
Fabio di Giannantonio suffered a dislocated left shoulder in an accident on Friday and has been deemed unfit to continue for the rest of the weekend.
