Francesco Bagnaia clinched victory in the 2024 Austrian MotoGP Sprint, reclaiming the championship lead following a significant setback for his competitor Jorge Martin, who was penalized with a long lap.
Bagnaia and Martin concluded the Sprint deadlocked at 250 points each, yet Bagnaia ascended to the leading position due to having secured more victories.
Marc Marquez fell from a secure runner-up position, allowing Aleix Espargaro to claim a spot on the podium.
Beginning from the top position and holding a narrow lead of three points ahead of Bagnaia, despite dealing with a sore thumb injury he got in his motorhome the previous evening, Martin missed the turn at the chicane due to a significant stoppie as he attempted to fend off Bagnaia during the second lap.
Shortly after overtaking Martin, Bagnaia found the Pramac racer closely following him. However, Martin's persistence was interrupted when he received a penalty notice for not dropping back at least one second after taking a shortcut, issued with nine laps remaining.
The extended lap resulted in Martin losing the second position to Marc Marquez, and he managed to re-enter the race slightly in front of Espargaro.
Bagnaia's lead remained secure throughout, while Martin reclaimed second place after Marquez's fall at Turn 3, occurring with just 5 laps remaining.
That error unexpectedly placed Espargaro on the podium, at a circuit that was considered one of the least favorable for him and the RS-GP.
Enea Bastianini, victorious at Silverstone, veered off track during the first lap and managed to claw his way back to fourth position.
The KTM competitors and Alex Rins were the only ones to select the medium rear tire. The rest of the field went with the soft rear, in addition to choosing the medium front.
This weekend, Pol Espargaro from KTM, Lorenzo Savadori of Aprilia, and Stefan Bradl representing Honda, are participating as wild-card entries.
The demanding conditions at the Sachsenring have led Michelin to introduce a stronger rear tyre design for the Red Bull Ring.
Updated regulations for tyre pressure in 2024 stipulate that racers are required to maintain a minimum front tyre pressure of 1.8 bar—down from 1.88 bar—for at least 60% of a Grand Prix race distance, an increase from the previous 50%, or for 30% of a Sprint event's duration.
If a driver does not achieve the required minimum in a Grand Prix, they will receive a time penalty of 16 seconds added to their post-race time. For a Sprint or shorter race, the penalty will be reduced to 8 seconds.
Following a crash on Friday, Fabio di Giannantonio suffered a dislocation of his left shoulder and has been deemed unable to compete for the rest of the weekend.
