Francesco Bagnaia triumphs over his championship competitor Jorge Martin to win the 2024 Emilia Romagna MotoGP Sprint race held in Misano.
Bagnaia managed to overtake Martin with six laps remaining after the Pramac rider went off track.
Martin, who began the Sprint with a seven-point lead over Bagnaia, now carries a narrow four-point lead into Sunday's grand prix.
Enea Bastianini, who is teammates with Bagnaia on the factory Ducati team, secured a spot on the podium, while Marc Marquez had to battle with Pedro Acosta for fourth place.
Bagnaia, who began from pole position with a fresh lap record, was overtaken by both Martin and Brad Binder at the start, mirroring the events of two weeks prior.
However, Bagnaia and Bastianini quickly overtook the KTM racer, and by the conclusion of the first lap, Marc Marquez, who started in seventh place, had pushed Binder back to fifth position.
By the halfway point of the 13-lap race, Bagnaia was closely trailing Martin. The mounting pressure eventually affected the Pramac rider, who, after being alerted about a track limits warning, made a minor error and went wide, losing the lead with 6 laps remaining.
The current two-time world champion, aiming for his 100th grand prix win this Sunday, managed to stay ahead of Martin until the finish line.
In the final moments, Bastianini surged to end up just 1.034 seconds behind Martin, whereas Marquez couldn't keep up with the top three and fell behind.
All the racers, with the exception of Alex Marquez, opted for the same medium front and soft rear tire setup that was utilized during the earlier 'Misano 1' Sprint.
The medium rear tire is anticipated to be the preferred choice for Sunday’s full-distance grand prix.
The Emilia Romagna Grand Prix is the second race in a back-to-back series at Misano, which was scheduled to replace the cancelled events in India and Kazakhstan.
Joan Mir from Repsol Honda had to sit out the entire San Marino Grand Prix because of severe gastroenteritis. His teammate, Joan Mir, also had to pull out of the Sunday race due to illness.
Both Honda competitors made a comeback for this weekend's event, while Alex Rins from Monster Yamaha pulled out on Saturday morning because of illness.
New regulations for tyre pressure in 2024 stipulate that riders need to maintain a minimum front tyre pressure of 1.8 bar, reduced from 1.88 bar, for at least 60% of the full Grand Prix race, up from the previous 50%, and for at least 30% of a Sprint race.
The consequence for not meeting this minimum in a Grand Prix is a 16-second penalty added to the post-race time, or an 8-second penalty for a Sprint or short race.
