Bagnaia Challenges Conventional Wisdom on GP24 vs GP23 Performance: Insists on Strange Lack of Development Impact
Pecco Bagnaia challenges the notion regarding GP24 versus GP23: "It feels somewhat odd."
"People ignore my perspective, as each individual holds a distinct viewpoint."
Current MotoGP world champion Francesco Bagnaia describes the progress from the GP23 to the GP24 this year as "odd," especially considering there hasn't been much advancement on the 2024 model.
In the past few years, Ducati's previous year models have consistently demonstrated they can clinch race victories, with Marco Bezzecchi in 2023 and Enea Bastianini in 2022 both contending for the world championship alongside the official team motorcycles.
Despite completing 10 races in 2024, a Ducati from the previous year has not secured a victory yet, and Marc Marquez, who is riding the top-performing GP23, currently sits fourth in the championship, trailing the leader, Jorge Martin, by 62 points.
Following a British Grand Prix where he expressed a loss of four to five seconds in each race to the GP24s, Marquez acknowledged that at some circuits, a noticeable gap existed between the 2023 and 2024 Ducatis.
However, addressing the media before the Austrian Grand Prix, Bagnaia has dismissed these claims, pointing out that the GP23 has undergone more updates this year compared to the GP24.
"Bagnaia expressed to DAZN, 'No matter what I put forward, it falls on deaf ears, as each person clings to their own perspectives, and frankly, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.'"
"After trying out both motorcycles, the GP22 stood out unmatched. It was the epitome of stability among them all."
"Interestingly, up until the Le Mans race, the GP23 was consistently competing for the win, but from that point onwards, we've consistently led by a significant margin, without making any enhancements."
"Since the trials, there's been no development on our end. However, since the start of the year, the GP23 has undergone two or three significant changes."
"Ultimately, they bear a strong resemblance. I'm aware that my words may fall on deaf ears, but this is the truth."
Lately, Gigi Dall’Igna, the general manager of Ducati, has stated that the Italian motorcycle brand is committed to advancing the development of the GP23.
