Bagnaia Blames Track Conditions and Tyre Issues for Aragon Sprint Struggles; Calls Grid ‘Very Dangerous
Francesco Bagnaia explains the reason behind the difficulties in the Aragon Sprint, calling the grid "very dangerous." Bagnaia stated, "It's not related to our bike, our team, or myself."
Francesco Bagnaia avoided using the term 'tyre' but excluded almost every other possibility while discussing why his performance in the Aragon MotoGP Sprint race was underwhelming.
Following a rough beginning from the less favorable side of the track, the current MotoGP champion and points leader fell back to sixth position.
He quickly overtook Miguel Oliveira and Alex Marquez, positioning himself just behind the leading trio of Marc Marquez, Jorge Martin, and Pedro Acosta by the second of eleven laps.
However, rather than catching up with the KTM in front, Bagnaia started to fall back and eventually finished in ninth place when the race ended.
Upon returning to the Ducati garage, Bagnaia signaled to his Michelin engineer with a gesture indicating "second time." He then chose his words thoughtfully and affirmed to MotoGP.com:
“It was the same situation as yesterday morning. It was beyond our control and had nothing to do with our bike, our team, or myself.”
"It's a possibility. The unusual part is that it occurred twice over the weekend. I'm really hoping that tomorrow will be an improvement."
In the meantime, Bagnaia, along with Aleix Espargaro and Alex Rins, voiced his disapproval of the grid's unclean state, noting that numerous riders, including himself, experienced wheelspin when beginning the race.
He explained, "I began the race from the less favorable side of the starting grid. During the Safety Commission meeting yesterday, I specifically requested them to clean the track and the starting grid because it could lead to issues otherwise. Unfortunately, it did become an issue."
"I was fortunate that Alex [Marquez] reacted quickly behind me, which prevented a collision, but it was a very risky situation."
Marc Marquez clinched his inaugural Sprint race victory riding a Ducati, dominating every session he participated in throughout the weekend.
Bagnaia commented, "He's achieving a lean angle that is 4-5 degrees greater than mine in some turns without losing control of the front, which is remarkable. His technique is the only one capable of this."
"He's the only one doing it. None of the other Ducati riders are. However, we're already aware of Marc's capabilities. Therefore, we'll make an attempt tomorrow."
Due to Bagnaia's struggles, Jorge Martin has regained the lead in the MotoGP championship by three points as they approach Sunday's full-length grand prix.
