Bagnaia and Martin Ready to Battle It Out at Red Bull Ring: No Holding Back in Tight MotoGP Championship Race
Pecco Bagnaia and Jorge Martin pledge to "embrace risk" at Red Bull Ring
"Now is not the time to ease off or avoid taking chances."
Heading into the latter half of the 2024 MotoGP season, competitors Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia are closely contending for the championship, with a mere three-point gap between them in the leaderboard.
The lead in the title race has shifted between Martin and Bagnaia, moving back and forth over the past three events.
In the 2023 season, the competition between them was only concluded in favor of Bagnaia during the final race, leading both to concur that it's premature to dial down their efforts and reduce risks.
"Martin commented, 'That's a fascinating query. However, from my perspective, I always give it my all, whether it's aiming for a podium finish or even fifth place. I appreciate whatever I can achieve.'"
"Definitely, I haven't started focusing on the championship yet. There's a lot left to unfold with half the season still ahead."
"Should you find yourself merely focusing on completing a race at present, or possibly having the opportunity to earn additional points yet refraining due to caution, you risk forfeiting points that could be crucial when the season concludes."
"The decision varies based on the weekend and circumstances, but should I find myself at the forefront on a Sunday needing to gamble, I'm willing to do so. Conversely, if it appears I stand no chance, I'll opt for a more cautious approach."
Bagnaia, who clinched two victories in Austria the previous year, further remarked, “Currently, the championship standings are extremely close, making it an inappropriate time to consider the risks. The focus should solely be on giving it your all at all times.
"I believe the situation will remain the same until the final two or three weekends of racing. For instance, last year in Japan, when there were [six] grand prix races left, we secured the top two positions in a flag-to-flag race that was both rainy and fraught with danger."
"In my view, it all hinges on the specific circumstances and the point we're at in the season. However, now isn't the appropriate time to ease off or to avoid taking risks."
With 370 points remaining in contention, the frontrunners in the championship have not discounted the possibility of their Ducati counterparts, Enea Bastianini, who is behind by 49 points, and Marc Marquez, trailing by 62 points, from joining the fight for the world title.
"Definitely, I believe we four are a notch above the rest," Martin stated. "So, let's find out. I feel like it's all still wide open."
"Bagnaia concurred, acknowledging the challenge in forecasting the current situation. He admitted that though he and Jorge have been the most consistent performers at the forefront, they've also had their fair share of errors during the races."
"Therefore, if Enea achieves the steadiness required, or if Marc does likewise, it promises to be a close competition until the finale. However, at present, forecasting is a challenge, and as of now, it appears the contest will be restricted to us four."
