Aprilia's Pole Position in the British MotoGP Conceals Persistent Racing Shortcomings

Key Highlights from the Discussion Post-Silverstone Race

The 10th race of the MotoGP season, coming after another three-week hiatus during the summer, marked the 75th anniversary of the series.

In tribute, each of the 11 MotoGP teams showcased unique vintage-inspired liveries during Sunday's 20-lap race, revealing their designs in a crowded Silverstone pit lane on the Thursday before the race.

Enea Bastianini, riding his factory Ducati adorned with a 2003 retro paint scheme, clinched his season's first grand prix victory by overtaking Pramac's Jorge Martin towards the end. Having secured a win in the sprint race the previous day, Bastianini amassed a total of 37 points, propelling his campaign in the latter half of his ultimate season with Ducati before transitioning to KTM in 2025, positioning himself as a serious contender for the championship.

By taking these actions, he aided his fellow team member, Francesco Bagnaia, in minimizing the impact on Martin in the rankings. This was crucial as a crash in the sprint and a hard-fought third place in the main race meant the two-time world champion was just three points shy of the lead as they moved on to Austria.

Ducati dominated the podium for the seventh consecutive race, establishing a new milestone, as Desmosedicis secured the first five positions in the grand prix rankings.

In another development, Aleix Espargaro secured the top starting position for Aprilia, however, his results during the races underscored significant challenges faced by the Noale brand. Meanwhile, strategies used during the qualifying rounds sparked controversy on Saturday morning.

Here are the five main insights from the 2024 British Grand Prix.

Bastianini ignites his championship aspirations

Enea Bastianini delivered perhaps his most outstanding performance of the 2024 season, comparable only to the initial round in Qatar back in March.

After it was apparent that he was no longer needed at Ducati ahead of the Italian Grand Prix, Bastianini has showcased exceptional performance. He secured the runner-up position at the Mugello race, overtaking Jorge Martin on the final lap; he rose from 10th to third place in the Dutch GP and achieved a commendable fourth place in Germany.

Consistently demonstrating impressive speed during the latter stages of races, Bastianini has struggled with qualifying throughout 2024. He acknowledged this Thursday at Silverstone, emphasizing the need to improve in this aspect. By Saturday morning, he secured the third position, later revealing his strategy to extract the best lap time with his initial tyre to circumvent any potential delays from yellow flags during his second attempt.

Beginning from a leading position gave the #23 racer an advantage during the initial stages, despite not being particularly fast at the start. He overtook Martin in the sixth lap of the sprint race, securing his initial win on a Saturday, and repeated this feat in the main race during the second-to-last lap after Martin made a mistake at Turn 3, allowing him to comfortably win by a margin of 1.931 seconds.

Aleix Espargaro compared Bastianini's smooth cornering technique to that of Dani Pedrosa at his peak, noting it reminded him of the 31-time grand prix champion's finest moments. Similarly, Marc Marquez commended his Ducati teammate for his "effective" approach to racing.

His knack for success resulted in four victories throughout 2022, keeping him in the championship race against Gresini deep into the season. With the GP24's improved engine braking feature, which was absent in the previous model, Bastianini is leveraging his riding technique more effectively, establishing himself as a formidable contender.

He may not view himself as a championship challenger at the moment, particularly because he believes his team-mate Francesco Bagnaia and Pramac's Martin possess a speed advantage over him, but a 49-point gap isn't insurmountable. This perspective is particularly valid when noting that Bagnaia experienced a 48-point shift from the French to the German Grand Prix.

Bagnaia's winning streak ends while Martin rebounds from German GP mishap

Bagnaia's impressive streak of four consecutive grand prix victories before the summer hiatus indicated he was leading the championship race, especially after his main competitor, Martin, suffered a crash while leading in the German GP.

Holding a 10-point advantage as he entered Silverstone, Bagnaia showcased impressive performance during the practice sessions and was a strong contender for the pole position. However, his chances were compromised when a sponsor's sticker came off and stuck to his visor, blocking his view during his critical final lap.

Struggling to deactivate his ride height mechanism during the initial corners of the sprint placed him at a disadvantage. However, his speed was of a caliber that could win races, and he had just recorded the quickest lap before he met with an accident and exited the race from fourth position on the fifth lap. This incident was his fifth failure to finish a race this season.

He acknowledged his error was responsible for the situation, which allowed Martin to regain nine points on Bagnaia, reducing his lead in the championship to a mere point. Initially, the race seemed promising for the Ducati team member as he led during the first half, but he eventually finished far behind Bastianini and Martin, securing third place.

Martin regained the lead in the points standings by a narrow margin of three, thanks to Bastianini's competitive performance, which helped minimize the setback for Bagnaia. Following the race, he shared that he struggled with insufficient grip from the Michelin front tire, preventing him from making his usual maneuvers. This issue forced him to over-rely on his rear tire, leading to its quicker depletion.

A brief opening at Luffield allowed Bastianini to pass and secure second place on the 14th lap. Following that, Bagnaia shifted his focus to maintaining his position, especially considering the events of the sprint race.

Martin acknowledged making multiple mistakes towards the end, yet he believes that even without these blunders, Bastianini would have remained unstoppable. He described his experience at the British GP as imperfect, yet not as disappointing as his time at the German GP.

This poses a challenge for Bagnaia because it indicates that Martin's psychological toughness hasn't been significantly dented by his mishap at Sachsenring. During a weekend when Bagnaia had hoped to further undermine Martin’s determination, he instead finds himself trailing once more in the rankings.

Aprilia's standout retro paint job during Sunday's race at Silverstone, featuring the 'Perla Nera' scheme Max Biaggi sported en route to his 250cc championships from 1994 to 1996, arguably topped the competition in terms of visual appeal on the track.

Securing victory at last year's British Grand Prix with Aleix Espargaro, the Noale brand was set for another major weekend as the Spaniard clinched pole position with an astounding new lap record.

Espargaro's choice to deviate from the norm by opting for a hard front tyre in the sprint led to a commendable third-place finish, a decision aimed at evaluating its performance for the main race. This strategic choice paid off, as it was later hailed as "the solution" that enabled Espargaro to secure a top-six finish in Sunday's grand prix, after being a contender for the podium positions at the beginning of the race.

At one point reaching as high as third, Espargaro's speed started to decline around the halfway mark, leaving him a second behind the front two racers. Things continued to deteriorate for the 35-year-old, who barely managed to secure sixth place, finishing slightly more than two-tenths ahead of Gresini's Alex Marquez.

Previously, the RS-GP was known for its superior traction, but in comparison to the Ducatis in 2024, Aprilia has faced challenges in this regard. This issue resulted in Espargaro excessively wearing out his medium rear tire during the British Grand Prix.

"He observed that, akin to Barcelona, providing an explanation is quite challenging, pointing out a comparable decline in performance over the race distance similar to that experienced by the Ducatis."

"Regarding the handling of the back tire, I was at a loss. It was quite aggravating to watch one Ducati after another pass me by, and I was powerless to stop it. I did everything possible with the bike's electronics, adjusting the traction control settings up and down, yet there was no further action I could take."

Fellow racer Maverick Vinales expressed his disappointment, finding it "hard to come to terms with" ending up in 13th position, attributing his poor performance to significant tyre wear. However, he acknowledged that the grip problems he faced on Saturday had been resolved.

Adding to Aprilia's woes, a collision occurred at Brooklands during the first lap as Raul Fernandez's braking maneuver led to a loss of control over his RS-GP's front end, causing it to crash into his team-mate Miguel Oliveira.

Kicking off 2024 with impressive momentum, Aprilia has since hit a snag in its progress. Vinales is urging Aprilia to reassess and figure out a way forward. With Ducati significantly widening its lead over its competitors this year, catching up to them presents a formidable challenge.

However, Aprilia faces the challenge of advancing its present motorcycle, especially since three of its racers are poised to depart, potentially sharing crucial insights with competing teams in 2025. Espargaro is set to become a test rider for Honda, Vinales is moving to KTM to compete, and Oliveira is expected to join Pramac with a Yamaha.

Marquez continues to encounter challenges during race weekends with the Ducati

This season, Marc Marquez's outings on the GP23 with Gresini have been impressive enough that one might overlook the fact that the British GP marked only his 10th appearance on this motorcycle. Achieving podium finishes in four Sunday races and securing top positions in five additional sprint races has maintained his contention for the championship.

Every competition presents a fresh challenge for Marquez and his team. This was clearly illustrated during a challenging Friday at Silverstone, where Marquez ended the second practice in 10th place, feeling significantly behind the frontrunners.

Qualification saw better results, but his pursuit of a slipstream (explained further below) was a setback, placing him in seventh. While in fourth position during the sprint, he met with an accident at Vale towards the end due to braking on the white line at the corner's entrance.

An adjustment made during the warm-up session led to a significant improvement, allowing Marquez to contend for a top-three finish in the initial stages of the Grand Prix. He ultimately secured fourth place, which he described as "a fantastic unexpected outcome".

He acknowledges that he spent the weekend struggling to find his rhythm, but he now recognizes that the 2024 Ducati model surpasses the GP23 on certain circuits, including Silverstone. Moreover, even when he reaches the performance level necessary to contend for podium positions, he's pushing his limits in comparison to his peers riding the factory Ducatis.

Currently trailing Martin by 62 points in the overall standings, Marquez's chances of contending for the title appear more challenging as the latter half of the season begins.

Tactics for qualifying become a focal point once more as opinions among riders are divided

The practice of riders seeking slipstreams during qualifying has been a persistent issue in MotoGP, and this controversy was rekindled at Silverstone following a chaotic Q2 session.

Multiple participants saw their laps hindered by slower riders, while the common tactic of some waiting for others to catch up and draft behind them was prevalent as ever.

In the post-qualifying parc ferme, world champion Bagnaia labeled the situation as “absurd,” whereas Pedro Acosta remarked, “We're not fools; we understand where we cause interference and where we don't. This has been happening for several races now – it's time to put an end to it.”

Marc Marquez, often criticized for employing this strategy, faced its drawbacks at Silverstone when he ended up trailing behind a slower Marco Bezzecchi, ruining what began as a promising lap.

The eight-time world champion expressed that without altering the current format, MotoGP's qualifying rounds will remain unchanged. However, Marquez was not keen on the idea of adopting a Superpole format, where riders go one by one, similar to what was previously seen in World Superbikes and is still used in certain British Superbikes competitions, dismissing it as "dull."

In the Moto2 and Moto3 categories, competitors are required to adhere to specified minimum sector times during the qualifying rounds. This rule was introduced to reduce hazardous conditions, especially prevalent in Moto3, where large groups of riders often wait on the track to gain slipstreams from others.

Aleix Espargaro disclosed during the Silverstone event that there had been previous conversations about a similar concept within the safety commission, yet a consensus was never achieved.

Ultimately, until a strict regulation is established to oversee behavior beyond what officials consider 'irresponsible riding' – typically a blatant case of obstruction, similar to the incident involving Martin and Raul Fernandez at Assen – competitors will persist in their actions as witnessed at Silverstone during the second qualifying session.

Currently, it might be wise for others to consider adopting the approach Espargaro used to achieve the top position in qualifying…
