Aprilia’s Braking Woes: Vinales and Rivola Demand Urgent Fix After ‘Unacceptable’ Austrian GP Deficit
Maverick Vinales identifies major flaw in Aprilia | Distance from frontrunners "intolerable"
Massimo Rivola states, "The distance from the competition in the race is intolerable."
Maverick Vinales pointed out that the Austrian MotoGP race exposed braking problems that Aprilia needs to address, following his challenging race where he finished in a distant seventh place and faced a significant gap compared to competitors, which he deemed "unacceptable."
The Red Bull Ring is not favorable for Aprilia because its stop-and-go design goes against the RS-GP’s advantage in fast corners.
Recently, Aprilia has consistently performed well in the sprint races. In the latest event, Aleix Espargaro secured third place after Marc Marquez, who was in second, crashed towards the end.
In the grand prix, Vinales finished seventh, trailing race winner Francesco Bagnaia by 24.322 seconds, while Espargaro dropped to ninth after being overtaken by Franco Morbidelli late in the race.
Following concerns raised at the British Grand Prix, especially regarding tyre wear, Vinales has pointed out that braking is a crucial aspect that Aprilia needs to improve.
He mentioned that they are figuring out their requirements.
"In essence, the issue lies with the brakes. From what we comprehend and from my perspective, it seems that we are not applying enough pressure to the front tire."
“We are not fully utilizing the front tire's potential.”
"There's an uneasy sensation that arises, particularly during the race as temperatures rise and the pressure intensifies. Therefore, it will be crucial to address this issue in Aragon."
He stated, "It was a race focused on defense. I attempted to maximize my performance. This track, in particular, presents challenges for me with braking."
"It was difficult to bring the bike to a halt. Honestly, I believe the outcome is positive and I managed to secure valuable points regardless."
"There are certain aspects where the motorcycle performed exceptionally well, but we also recognize that improvements are needed, particularly in the braking system."
Aprilia's CEO, Massimo Rivola, mentioned that the team gathered valuable data for analysis in Austria, but criticized the performance gap compared to their competitors.
He stated that they reiterated their competitiveness in both the qualifying session and the sprint race.
"Regrettably, as the race progresses and the distance grows, our tyres wear out and we lose our competitive edge."
"We were aware that this track wasn't the best suited for our bike, but we also faced significant problems with overheating."
"We gathered vital information that will help us make improvements. Our only option is to continue working hard, as the current gap between us and the other competitors is not acceptable."
