Andrea Dovizioso Steps In for Injured Cal Crutchlow at Yamaha’s Misano Test
Today, Andrea Dovizioso is set to ride a Yamaha in the MotoGP, taking over from Cal Crutchlow. This marks Dovizioso's first time back on a Yamaha since his last ride at Misano in 2022.
Ex-MotoGP championship contender Andrea Dovizioso is set to make a comeback on a Yamaha M1 in today's exclusive Misano trial.
The Italian racer, who concluded his last season in the premier class with the RNF Yamaha satellite team in 2022, is stepping in for the wounded official test rider Cal Crutchlow.
The British rider is currently recuperating from 'complications' that arose after undergoing surgery on his hand, issues that have led to him missing two scheduled wild-card entries, at Mugello and Silverstone.
WorldSBK competitor Remy Gardner recently stepped in for Crutchlow, taking over the ride for the injured Alex Rins at the Sachsenring and also at the British Grand Prix as a wild-card entry.
Nonetheless, the 26-year-old Australian emphasized that his primary attention is on the competition. Dovizioso, aged 38, will join Fabio Quartararo and Rins on the circuit at his home race this Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Dovizioso expressed his regret that Cal has yet to recover, wishing him a swift recovery. He mentioned his achievement of winning 14 MotoGP races with Ducati and one with Honda."
With that being said, I'm thrilled and eager for the opportunity to ride a MotoGP bike once more, and I want to express my gratitude to Yamaha for making this possible.
"I aspire to play a role in advancing bicycle innovation."
Dovizioso completed his final circuits as a professional racer at Misano during the 2022 San Marino MotoGP. Following this event, he entered retirement, and for the rest of that season, test rider Crutchlow took over his position.
Monster Yamaha's team leader, Massimo Meregalli, expressed: “To begin with, I want to extend our best wishes for a quick recovery to Cal and eagerly look forward to his return to the track with our testing squad soon.
"Nonetheless, during this period, we must not remain inactive."
We're thrilled to announce that Andrea has accepted to step in for Cal, assuming the position of Yamaha Factory Racing MotoGP Test Rider during the exclusive Misano test.
For many years, Andrea and Yamaha have shared a deep bond. Dovi is recognized for his exceptional riding skills and precision, along with his comprehensive grasp of MotoGP's technical aspects.
"Additionally, beyond his expertise in the MotoGP series, he has a good understanding of Yamaha's MotoGP Project, which makes us highly anticipate maintaining our collaboration with him. We believe he will be instrumental in gathering crucial information and providing insightful feedback."
Riders from the Repsol Honda team will hit the track at Misano this week and then move on to compete in the Aragon Grand Prix at the month's close.
