Andrea Dovizioso Steps In for Injured Cal Crutchlow at Yamaha MotoGP Test: A Return to Familiar Grounds at Misano
Andrea Dovizioso fills in for Cal Crutchlow at the Yamaha MotoGP test.
Andrea Dovizioso makes a comeback to a Yamaha MotoGP bike, his first since Misano 2022.
Andrea Dovizioso, who once finished second in the MotoGP championship, is set to get back on a Yamaha M1 for a private test session at Misano this week.
The Italian rider, who concluded his last season in the premier class on a satellite RNF Yamaha in 2022, is stepping in for the injured factory test rider Cal Crutchlow.
The English rider continues to recuperate from issues that arose after undergoing hand surgery. These complications have already caused him to miss two scheduled wild-card entries at Mugello and Silverstone.
Remy Gardner, a WorldSBK competitor, recently stepped in for Cal Crutchlow, filling in for the injured Alex Rins at the Sachsenring and later participating as a wild-card entry at the British Grand Prix.
The 26-year-old Australian emphasized that his main priority is racing. Meanwhile, 38-year-old Dovizioso will be on the track with Fabio Quartararo and Rins at his home circuit on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"I regret that Cal is still unwell, and I wish for his swift recovery," stated Dovizioso, who secured 14 MotoGP victories with Ducati and one with Honda.
"With that being mentioned, I am thrilled and eager to have the opportunity to ride a MotoGP bike once more, and I want to express my gratitude to Yamaha for giving me this chance."
"I aspire to play a role in advancing the development of the bicycle."
Dovizioso completed his final laps as a regular competitor at the Misano track during the 2022 San Marino MotoGP. Following this event, he retired and was succeeded by test rider Crutchlow for the rest of the season.
Monster Yamaha's team leader, Massimo Meregalli, expressed his well-wishes by stating, "Before anything else, I want to extend our hopes for Cal's quick recovery and look forward to having him return to the track with our testing team soon."
"Yet, during this period, we must remain active."
"We are thrilled to announce that Andrea has accepted the position to stand in for Cal and will serve as the Yamaha Factory Racing MotoGP Test rider during the private test at Misano."
Andrea has maintained a strong partnership with Yamaha over numerous years. Dovi is an exceptionally talented and meticulous rider who possesses a solid grasp of the technical aspects of MotoGP.
"In addition to his MotoGP championship experience, he knows Yamaha's MotoGP Project well. We're excited to keep working with him, as we believe he will provide us with important data and useful feedback."
The Repsol Honda racing team riders are set to take to the track at Misano this week, with plans to compete in the Aragon Grand Prix later this month.
