American MotoGP Dreams Dashed: Joe Roberts Overlooked as Trackhouse Signs Ai Ogura
"Missed Opportunity" Drama as American Racer Passed Over for MotoGP
"Perfect Candidate" Joe Roberts Likely to Be Ignored, Disappointing US Racing Fans
Shock has been voiced regarding Joe Roberts apparently being overlooked for a transition to MotoGP.
The Aprilia satellite team, Trackhouse, which has support from the United States, was heavily rumored to be considering Moto2 rider Roberts from America for their squad next season.
However, they have officially announced that Ai Ogura, his competitor in the Moto2 series from Japan, will join the team along with Raul Fernandez.
Neil Hodgson mentioned to TNT Sport regarding Roberts: "Everyone believed it was the obvious match."
The primary concern regarding Roberts was whether he had sufficient speed this year. He has responded to that doubt by securing race wins. Now, he's contending for the championship alongside Ogura.
"In terms of overall speed, I would rank Ogura higher. However, considering the commercial aspects, generally speaking?"
"Trackhouse, an American racing team with a unique approach, plans to leverage social media to expand the sport's popularity."
"It seems like they've overlooked a great opportunity! Roberts has charm and the attractive appeal of a Californian—exactly the qualities needed to promote the sport to a broader audience."
"Rather, you opted for Ogura, who is slightly quicker on the course. I believe this is a missed chance."
Alex Lowes commented on Ogura, stating, "There's no denying he has earned it. He's a skilled rider who merits a spot in MotoGP."
“It would have been wonderful to have someone like Joe, with his character, representing America in MotoGP again. I think everyone would have enjoyed that, and it seemed logical. It’s unfortunate.”
Hodgson noted that among the 16 riders from Spain and Italy, only two speak English: Jack Miller and Brad Binder.
Lowes responded by saying, "You shouldn't resent anyone for getting a chance. Ogura, in terms of ability, has earned it."
Hodgson cautioned that Trackhouse overlooking Roberts will result in a dearth of American racers in MotoGP for the foreseeable future.
Hodgson mentioned that Roberts is going to turn 28 next year. He added that all positions are filled, and the majority of people have contracts lasting two years.
"How long has it been since there was an American rider in MotoGP?"
"We're facing a similar scenario with British riders. Following Jake Dixon, who appears unlikely to get an opportunity, we're in for a prolonged period of waiting."
Roberts holds third place in the Moto2 rankings, with Ogura in the second spot. Sergio Garcia is currently at the top of the championship standings
Moto2 racers set to advance to MotoGP next season feature Ogura joining Trackhouse, Fermin Aldeguer moving to Ducati, likely with Gresini, and Somkiat Chantra, who is strongly rumored to be heading to LCR Honda.
However, it appears that Roberts will not have a place.
