Alonso Claims Ferrari Missed Victory in Singapore Grand Prix Despite Fastest Car Assertion
Fernando Alonso Asserts Ferrari "Ought to Have Triumphed" in Singapore
Was Ferrari's vehicle the quickest in Singapore? Fernando Alonso believes it was.
Fernando Alonso has unexpectedly stated that Ferrari had the potential to secure victory at the Singapore Grand Prix.
Ferrari faced a disappointing qualifying round at the Marina Bay Street Circuit, managing to secure only the ninth and tenth positions on the starting grid.
Charles Leclerc encountered an error during his Q3 attempt when his tires failed to reach the optimal temperature, meanwhile, Carlos Sainz met with an accident at the last series of turns.
During the race, Leclerc managed to climb back to a fifth-place finish despite being held up by Alonso and Nico Hulkenberg earlier on.
Sainz advanced to the seventh position following an early pit stop strategy, overtaking several competitors in the midfield, among them Alonso.
After the Singapore race, Alonso was of the opinion that Ferrari possessed the "quickest vehicle during this event."
"According to what Alonso expressed in his comments to Motorsport.com, the Ferraris were undoubtedly the favorites to clinch the victory this time around due to their superior speed throughout the weekend."
Regarding Alonso's performance in the race, the Spanish driver secured an impressive eighth-place finish by gaining an advantage over Hulkenberg during the pit stops.
Alonso feels that Aston Martin's point-scoring at the Singapore race was more a matter of fortune, pointing out the challenges he encountered with the car's handling.
"Just behind the leading four squads, positioned slightly ahead of Checo, the ninth and tenth spots are usually up for grabs. Securing the eighth position surpasses our greatest expectations," he further mentioned.
Positive aspects were there, yet we remained a full lap behind with a pace that wasn't impressive, and the car proved challenging to handle throughout the event. Consequently, we were fortunate to score points; however, it's conceivable that we could have finished in 15th place and experienced the same sentiment.
"I believe our position ought to be between 15th and 16th. Currently, we're in eighth place, lagging by two seconds behind a Ferrari. Therefore, I'm unsure if there's anything more I can achieve."
Aston Martin currently holds the fifth position in the F1 constructors' standings.
