Alex Rins Withdraws from Emilia Romagna MotoGP: “I Had Difficulty Breathing”
"I quickly understood that I wasn't fully recovered"
Following an absence from Friday's afternoon practice because of a high fever, Alex Rins returned to his M1 motorcycle on Saturday morning at the Emilia Romagna MotoGP.
However, the Spanish driver had difficulty breathing, ended up at the bottom of the timesheets, and did not come back for the qualifying session.
Following discussions with MotoGP's medical director Dr. Ángel Charte, the Monster Yamaha team announced that Rins will not participate in the rest of the current event. Instead, he will concentrate on recovering his fitness in preparation for the Indonesian round next weekend.
Earlier today, I felt significantly improved and decided to attempt riding my bike on the track,” Rins mentioned. “Sadly, it quickly became apparent that I wasn't fully recovered, as I found it difficult to breathe.
“I hoped to finish the session, but right after, Dr. Charte came to see me and recommended that I avoid getting back on the bike. He suggested that I should focus on treatment to ensure I’m fully prepared and in top condition for Indonesia.
“Clearly, I'm quite disappointed that I can't compete in Misano, but I'll do my best to get better quickly.”
Team director Massimo Meregalli mentioned, “Sadly, Alex has been hit by a severe flu. We decided to delay his participation in the Practice session yesterday and reschedule it for today's FP2.”
This morning, he attempted to ride again; however, based on Dr. Charte's recommendation, we opted to pull Álex out of the Emilia-Romagna GP so he can be ready for the upcoming race weekend in Mandalika.
“It’s unfortunate, and we all feel bad for Álex. He trained hard for this Grand Prix during the Misano Test, but he showed up here not feeling well, and there was nothing we could do about it. Let’s remain optimistic, and next week we’ll begin anew.”
Sickness has impacted the MotoGP paddock in both Misano events, leading to Repsol Honda's Joan Mir and later Luca Marini having to withdraw from the San Marino Grand Prix.
Fabio Quartararo, who is Rins' teammate, recorded the second fastest time during the last practice session and secured the ninth position on the starting grid during qualifying.
The Japanese Grand Prix at Motegi takes place right after the event in Indonesia.
