Aleix Espargaro’s Astonishing Sprint Podium at ‘Worst Track’ Red Bull Ring
Aleix Espargaro Secures MotoGP Sprint Podium at His "Toughest Circuit"
Aleix Espargaro expressed immense joy after clinching a podium spot in the MotoGP Sprint, despite considering it his most challenging track.
Aleix Espargaro achieved his first-ever podium finish at the Red Bull Ring during the Sprint race of the Austrian MotoGP.
Espargaro's highest placement at the Styrian track since MotoGP began racing there in 2016 was sixth place in 2022. He didn't make it into the top 10 until the 2021 season.
Given these circumstances, it's understandable why Espargaro considers the Red Bull Ring to be his least favorite track.
Espargaro expressed his immense joy to the MotoGP international TV audience following the Austrian Sprint. He said, "This is likely one of the finest Saturdays of my career. I never anticipated this result in Austria — historically my most challenging track where I've rarely finished in the top 10. Achieving the lap time I did in qualifying and then securing a podium finish in the Sprint is incredible."
Espargaro's third-place finish in the Sprint was a significant achievement not just for him but also for Aprilia, as the team had never secured a podium in Austria prior to this. The best they had managed before was Espargaro's sixth place in 2022, which Maverick Vinales equaled once during the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix.
Espargaro was so astonished to secure a podium finish at the Red Bull Ring that he claimed the joy of clinching third place today surpassed the thrill he experienced from some of his victories in the last three years.
“I’m overjoyed,” Espargaro went on. “This feels even more satisfying than winning some Sprint races or regular races because this track presents a significant challenge for both Aprilia and me, so I’m incredibly proud.”
Espargaro secured a podium spot following a crash by Marc Marquez, who had a significant lead over Espargaro before his accident at turn three. Consequently, it appears improbable that Espargaro will challenge for his first full-race podium at the Red Bull Ring in the upcoming Austrian Grand Prix. The event is expected to be dominated by Ducati, with Francesco Bagnaia having already clinched the Sprint race victory.
