Adrian Newey Charts His Own Course Amid F1 Future Speculation, Remains Focused on Legacy Projects
Adrian Newey admits he's not closely following speculation regarding his career path in Formula 1, relying on his wife to keep him updated.
Adrian Newey expresses that he remains largely unaware of the speculation regarding his future in F1.
Speculation continues to swirl in the Formula 1 circles about the future plans of the iconic automobile designer, following the announcement in May that he will part ways with Red Bull by early 2025, concluding an impressive stint spanning almost 20 years at their Milton Keynes base.
The news of Newey's forthcoming availability has triggered a rush among interested parties aiming to enlist his services, leading to increased speculation about the next move for the 65-year-old.
Latest updates indicate that Aston Martin is now leading the race to secure Newey, who has been associated with potential moves to Ferrari, Mercedes, McLaren, and Williams.
"Newey mentioned on Red Bull's own Talking Bull podcast that this aspect is quite straightforward for him since he has ceased engaging with social media and doesn't really follow magazine content anymore, a habit he dropped some time ago."
Reflecting on my time with Leyton House, my initial project was in 1988 – clearly revealing my age! It turned out to be a decent vehicle. However, by 1989, we had totally botched it, leading me to transition from being hailed as the fresh engineering marvel in the F1 paddock to being labeled as a one-hit wonder who couldn't replicate his success.
"I figured that it doesn't make sense to enjoy media coverage when it's favorable and then be bothered by it when it's not. So, I decided to simply stop keeping up with the media."
He further mentioned, "Mandy, my spouse, is quite active on social media. She generally updates me about the happenings, though I myself am not very aware of it.
"I simply aim to live my life without letting it sway me."
Newey has announced his intention to stay engaged with the RB17 hypercar initiative even after his departure from Red Bull.
"It was an extremely challenging choice to make – truly challenging – but it was something I believed was necessary for a multitude of reasons," he shared.
"However, the upside is that, firstly, I realized I also needed some downtime. That's exactly what we're taking. Moreover, it allows me to dedicate my entire focus to RB17 from this moment until the first quarter of next year.
"Truly, following that moment and once my tenure with Red Bull has concluded, in complete concord with Christian, the shareholders, and the senior leadership at Red Bull, I will maintain my involvement with the 17.
"Through email correspondence, telephone conversations, during dynamometer and track evaluations as we initiate the testing phase, I've devoted a substantial amount of effort into this vehicle, treating it as a labor of love. This dedication has often occurred during my personal time, such as nighttime or over weekends, making it impossible for me to abandon the project now."
In response to a question about his most memorable experiences at Red Bull, Newey stated, "From the beginning, my ambition and wish were that we might eventually secure a race victory.
In 2008, Sebastian achieved victory at Monza driving the Toro Rosso, which was a unique win for us since it was our vehicle, yet not our team competing. The initial triumph for Red Bull, which came in China in 2009, marked a significant milestone.
"Moving forward to the final race in Abu Dhabi in 2010, securing the championship despite the unlikely circumstances, thanks to Sebastian's performance that weekend and Ferrari's strategic error – that's an unforgettable moment."
"We experienced numerous tight contests for the championship, with the 2012 season also coming to a climax in the final race. During that event, Sebastian was turned around in the initial turn, resulting in significant damage to the car's exterior. Nevertheless, we persevered and ultimately secured the victory."
"Subsequently, Verstappen's initial championship win in 2021 is something that, in my opinion, will be discussed for a long time to come. Reflecting on my extensive experience in auto racing, that year stands out as the most challenging."
