Acosta and Fernandez Eye Aragon Comeback: Seeking Redemption and Rookie Renewal at Home Grand Prix
Pedro Acosta aims for a comeback at the Aragon Grand Prix after facing his most challenging weekend, while Augusto Fernandez feels like he's starting fresh as a newcomer. Acosta is heading into his third domestic MotoGP race, looking to make amends following a tough outing in Austria.
Austria's race weekend, described as the most challenging of the year, saw MotoGP newcomer Pedro Acosta struggle, leading to Brad Binder overtaking him for the highest KTM position in the provisional world championship rankings.
Acosta is set to participate in his third home race at Aragon this weekend, currently holding the seventh position in the rankings. He is just three points behind his soon-to-be team member Brad Binder and 14 points away from Aprilia's Maverick Vinales.
The young racer from Spain, aged 20, finished in 10th and 13th place in the races at the Red Bull Ring and aims to make a comeback at the Aragon circuit, a track he knows well. He previously clinched a victory there in the Moto2 category during the latest Grand Prix in 2022.
"Acosta, who has been practicing at Misano on a Moto2 motorcycle since the Austria race, mentioned, 'The upcoming third home race is on the horizon, and Friday's initial session will be crucial for assessing our performance.'"
"The weekend in Austria might have been the most challenging of the year, with Thursday's preparations in the pit lane expected to be more intensive than usual.
I devoted a couple of days to training in Misano, which helped in enhancing my intuition.
"One advantage of MotorLand is my familiarity with the circuit, thanks to multiple training sessions held there throughout the year, which will benefit us."
"I aim to perform better than I did last weekend and kick off a hectic September in the most ideal manner."
Over his first seven MotoGP races, Acosta managed an impressive average of 14 points per race, securing a spot in the top three five times (either in Sprint or GP). However, in the subsequent four races, his performance dipped, with an average of only 6 points per race.
"Pedro hasn't performed as anticipated in the recent contests," remarked Nicolas Goyon, the team manager for GASGAS Tech 3.
"Everyone is conscious of the situation, and we're diligently striving to support him and provide him with a motorcycle that will enable him to reclaim his leading position. We believe that the Aragon circuit is a layout that will favor him."
Despite being in his second season at the premier level, Augusto Fernandez will once more be considered a newcomer this weekend since MotoGP did not hold a race at Aragon the previous year.
He expressed excitement about competing in Aragon, stating it would mark his debut in MotoGP, giving him the sensation of being a newcomer once more this week.
"This is a circuit that brings me much joy, one where I've historically performed well, and it feels almost like a home race to me."
"Collectively, I'm eagerly anticipating this round, and I'm hopeful that we'll receive complete backing from the Spanish supporters."
The track at Aragon has undergone resurfacing since the 2022 event.
