Enea Bastianini chases down Jorge Martin to claim victory in the 2024 British MotoGP at Silverstone, while the Pramac racer still regains the championship lead from Francesco Bagnaia.
Bastianini secured a double victory at Silverstone, winning both the Sprint race and the main event, by overtaking Martin who went off track with just 2 laps remaining.
As Bagnaia's speed declined and he managed to secure third place with difficulty, Martin, who started the race only one point behind the current world champion due to Pecco's fall in the Sprint, has reclaimed the lead in the standings.
Chilly weather conditions complicated the selection of tyres, and this was before any raindrops fell on the starting grid.
Every rider chose the medium option for both the rear and front tires, with the exception of Aleix Espargaro and Raul Fernandez from Aprilia, who opted for the hard front tire.
Fernandez's race ended early on the first lap due to a collision with his Trackhouse teammate, Miguel Oliveira.
Espargaro, who secured pole position, was quickly overtaken by the Ducati GP24 bikes at the start but managed to regroup and overtake Bastianini to reclaim third place in the opening laps.
The leading positions became steady with Bagnaia, Martin, and Espargaro heading a group of five riders, which also included Bastianini and Marc Marquez.
As Espargaro started to lose pace, Bastianini moved back into third place, but he had a 1.2-second deficit to Martin and Bagnaia.
Martin lunged forward to take the lead, overtaking Bagnaia at Turn 3. The last 8 laps commenced with Martin, Bagnaia, and Bastianini racing side by side.
Bagnaia showed vulnerability when he eventually allowed Bastianini to pass by going off his racing line.
Bastianini had seven laps to close an 0.8-second gap to Martin, and he quickly reduced the distance, putting significant pressure on Martin.
Following a mostly uneventful race, Marc Marquez overtook Espargaro to secure fourth place in the final moments and nearly challenged Bagnaia.
In a fierce contest for sixth position, Alex Marquez and VR46 rider Fabio di Giannantonio clashed intensely just before reaching the halfway point of the race. Ultimately, Diggia signaled to Marquez by tapping the back of his seat, suggesting he should trail behind him.
In the final laps, di Giannantonio overtook Espargaro to secure fifth place.
Espargaro was participating in his 329th Grand Prix, placing him third in the historical standings, trailing only Valentino Rossi with 432 starts and Andrea Dovizioso with 346 starts.
Franco Morbidelli was penalized with a double long lap for causing a collision with Marco Bezzecchi at the beginning of the Saturday Sprint race.
Bezzecchi, despite dealing with pain in his right foot, secured the eighth position.
Brad Binder, who was leading the warm-up, unexpectedly decelerated and moved away from the starting grid. He narrowly avoided being struck by other bikes before he had to withdraw his RC16. The updated tyre pressure regulations for 2024 now require riders to maintain a minimum front tyre pressure of 1.8 bar for at least 60% of a Grand Prix race, as opposed to the previous 1.88 bar for 50% of the race. For Sprint races, riders must adhere to this minimum for 30% of the race.
If the minimum requirement is not met in a Grand Prix, a time penalty of 16 seconds will be added after the race. For a Sprint or short race, the penalty will be 8 seconds.
Luca Marini is being scrutinized for having insufficient tire pressure during today's race.
To mark 75 years of motorcycle grand prix racing, every bike and rider featured a unique retro design.
The MotoGP race was the second event of the day, as the Moto2 race was rescheduled to the end of Sunday's program to maintain its typical television broadcast time for European audiences.
The Austrian MotoGP event at the Red Bull Ring is scheduled for August 16-18.
